Skullworks KA Oil Block Ver. 2

So, we're getting ready to make more of these guys since I get asked for them regularly.

one of the things we were asked on more than a few occasions last time we made them
was why we put 8AN size fittings on the blocks as opposed to the more popular 10AN?

the reason was twofold:
- first, there really isn't a need to, everybody we talked to didn't see a need for a larger size and increased flow.

- the second has to do with design restrictions; the proximity of the the oil inlet and outlet holes makes it impossible to put 10AN fittings
next to each other and still have the required clearance to be able to thread them in and out.

Well, we think we have a solution.
We can do away with the fittings and mill the 10AN fitting heads directly to the top of the oil block thereby getting around the design restriction.

Would you guys prefer that over the current version?
The drawback: it's a more intricate design that will make the oil blocks more expensive to make. We figure we would ask $160 for them paypaled and shipped.

Here's your opportunity to provide us with feedback and get the parts you want made the way you want them.

I know Im just one fish out of the big sea, however I personally would still like the old setup. Here's an idea just to throw your way. Just continue to make the old ones like you were doing previously. But do like a group buy for the 10AN fittings. Like once you have 10 deposits or an amount that will make it worth while for you then make it in sets or groups only so you dont lose out but can still supply for the peeps out there that are asking of the new product. So that way its a win win for both parties? No? Idk. Just trying to give some useful help.

That's actually not a bad idea.
From our point of view, we would prefer to just make one design
since juggling two very similar parts would be a PITA for us.
If we don't get enough feedback, we're just make them the same as last time.

Yeah I hear what your saying... I just figured make the old one like everyone likes and wants and for the people who are wanting the new one then just get a group buy on it with deposits and make it worth your while before you make it worth their while.

oil blocks

So roughly whats the time frame on having the new oil blocks done. I'm ready to buy ASAP. I got a motor going in now.

Also, if your doing anodizing this time, then i'd prefer no anodizing or clear anodizing.

thanks,
kyle

We'll probably set a batch of bare aluminum blocks aside since people seem to like that finish/look.
Personally, I don't understand why - bare aluminum corrodes and anodizing helps protect the material

I want to hard anodize the next batch since I like the finish.
Would look similar to the Hot Rod satin finish:

we tentatively plan to start making them within the next couple of weeks.
Would take maybe 2-3 weeks after that if everything goes down smoothly.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. If it means easier access to the fittings if I need to get in there in a pinch I am all about keeping it as it is now. Not much of an advantage, and I see no oil starvation issues by using the 8AN.

+1

That flat black look would look nice too. How much will these cost? Ima put the money aside now and when its time to pay, then i will have it.

Should start taking ppl's names down or do like pay half now and then when products made, the other half will be payed.

i need one of these......
now feed back on your new design quesions
i did a small search and found that most of the relocacion kits use 8an anyway, so why waste time on searching and adapting a filter relocacion for 10an and cooler...
i seem to think its easier to leave it alone like it is
by the way did i say i need one

Interesting, here we were thinking that people actually wanted 10AN fittings
Even if we keep them 8AN, which is what is looking like we'll do,
we'll probably mess around with milling the fittings directly to the block in an effort
to make the block slimmer and maybe provide more clearance.
We'll try to keep the price the same as before.

An o-ring groove on the mounting surface would be nice. This would get rid of the gasket or rtv that has to be used.

Adding an o-ring to the bottom surface was actually something we thought about
but ultimately decided not to pursue.
The reason is that an o-ring seal required very smooth surfaces for it to work properly.
The surface on our oil block is not problem since it's machined but the surface on the KA block, while machined, isn't smooth enough for an o-ring to properly seal.
That and leaking with gasket/RTV hasn't been an issue.

Also, we have already added to viton 0-rings to seal the oil outlet neck from the KA block as can be seen here:

we may very well add the groove but it would act as a guide for RTV.

The only thing I can think of is maybe changing the angle of the two side fittings to clear the bolts, for easier install. I might be purchasing another block with the satin black finish.

also one more thing
you are gonna try and mill the fitting in but, in my case i was gonna install 90's to maintain a clean un clutered look
so i prefer the female thread on the block

I definitely want one or two of them. I prefer the original 8AN design, and would like it to retain the removable fittings, "just in case." I do like the hard anodizing idea though.

We expect to get started in two weeks time
(we're currently knocking out Brembo caliper brackets)
after that, parts would take a month or so to be done

my oil lines were 10an already for my cooler set up so i took the summit book out and got -8 o-ring one side and -10 male on the other side and switched mine over to 10an, i just had to take a grinder and grind the hex portion down so the corners of the hex didnt contact and they could be tightened. its worked fine for me, i would like to buy a second one though for my back/up engine and spare parts car im putting together, and know several people whole saw mine and would buy them cant wait for the next run!!!!!

if you kept the old design i wouldnt need fitting with my next one, i still have my -8 from the last one laying around and i would proablly do the -10 mod again anyways.
