s13 Sway Bar setup... overkill?

Hey guys,
So I've been reading a lot over the past few years and I purchased a front Progress S13 sway bar (27mm) which is 3 way adjustable and has heim end links. Now I was planning on getting the matching rear 22mm progress bar but I recently got a crazy deal on a rear whiteline skyline R32 adjustable sway bar (24mm) which is 2 way adjustable so I jumped on it. Now the progress kit comes with 27mm front and 22mm rear but now im wondering if there will be a negative effect on running the larger 24mm rear whiteline swaybar I just got... Do you guys think its a little overkill or am I just wasting time worrying about 2mm? Just to specify, it'll be going on a s13 convertible with a half cage (6 point) and setup for street/light track use. What are your thoughts? overkill? should I sell the rear whiteline and get the rear progress?

Sway bar setup depends on your springs setup, tyres, and driving preferences. I ran my s13 with a 30mm front and 27mm rear, then ditched the rear one for a stock one, then removed them fully, front and rear. I might put the front again once i find a way to install it properly though...

Word of advice, try running with the big front, and the oem rear first. Install new bushes if needed on the stock bar. Then disconnect one of the rear droplink, and see for yourself if you like one more than the other. The softer the bar, the more traction you get. I don't think you will be able to feel that 2mm difference, but after some time you could notice you want the bar a little bit stronger or softer.

Since you already have the big rear bar, you can try it, too.

My track driving style, although not efficient (but who cares ? i don't chase time, i chase fun), consists in entering corners slower than I could just so i can bury the throttle pedal into the ground as soon as i enter it. I like that "pushing" feeling a lot, controlling the car with a strict minimum of steering input, on the verge or countersteering, and it requires traction to do so. Thus the "no rear swaybar" is fine for me (the torsen helps a lot too, i could not control the car that way if i didn't have one). If you'd rather drift, a big rear sway bar will make the car easier to break traction and control.

BTW your cage is 4 points if it is a half cage. "Points" refers to the number of places it joins the chassis, no matter how much cusco likes to tell the opposite.

Also a very nice upgrade for chassis is the nismo power brace (or any home made copy). That and the half cage both transformed my car, way more than any brace i fitted previously.

sorry I should of specified... in terms of suspension im running PBM pro's (8K/6K), drop knuckles, battle version multi-links, ES bushings, whiteline subframe bushings, kts rear member support bars, do-luck front ladder bar, do-luck floor brace, nismo power brace, carbing front strut bar, nagisa fender braces and yes my cage is a 6 point (half cage)... plus my progress (27mm) 3 way adj front sway and possibly my whiteline (24mm) 2 way adj rear sway... which is in question.

So, quite a stiff chassis. It still depends on tyres, usage and personal preference though

There is a difference between 22 and 24mm, but not so much. And i believe the progress is a full bar vs hollow bar for whiteline, so the whiteline may be weaker than the progress.

Anyway you can't really go wrong with these. Just remember you actually have 4 settings front and 3 rear ( disconnected is a setting too). With springs that hard, i am not sure the sway bar will have a noticeable effect (except lifting the interior tyre in corners). I discovered i was running without the front sway bar when i went under the car after a track event. Droplink was broken, and i didn't notice it much (i felt like the car was understeering more than usual on corner entry but not so much)


I can't see what a 6 points half cage is, the only half cages i ever saw were 4 points. If you can show a pic, just for personal curiosity ?

thanks for your input I will give that a try (stock vs whiteline vs none) my 6 point makes contact with the rear suspension tower area, floor behind the seats area and at foot well kick panel area... so its identical to a 4 point with the exception of having door bars that run to the foot well. It was the single best mod for my drop top...

Just put it this way. Drivers are different, they drive differently some prefer coasting through corners some wanna smash through and so the suspension should be adjusted accordingly to the preferences. Generally if you tend to oversteer in an s13 (rwd) while throttling out you would want to stiffen up your front sway bar to have a more neutral setup. If you get bigger rear sway bar you will tend to oversteer again. Best I've found is 27mm front, stock rear sway with poly bushings.
