s13 Start Up Issue - *your thoughts*

I recently slammed into a curb sliding, and i've fixed just about everything that was wrong (which includes new wiring harness, tc rod, tie rod, crossmember, etc)

But there is one issue that i can't seem to resolve. When I attempt to start it at a cold start, it merely turns over, and over and over and wont start, until i tap the gas pedal repeatedly. I also notice that when my key is turned to the on position my fuel pump continually runs o.O

Are these problems related? And has anyone ever had this issue, if so, what was your solution.

(fyi i am running a stock sr20 w/t25, smic)

and i realize this is 1 of a 9423654564568 posts about start up problems, but i have been looking through threads trying to diagnose the problem. None of the other start up problems have the same symptoms as mine. *sigh*

u mean ur pump continues to prime?

could be a bad ecu.. priming mode is controlled by the ecu.

check your fuel pump relay too

yeah it is on an s13...

honestly it sounds like a bad pump or if your priming all the time it could be flooding out when u turn the key

my thoughts exactly about the flooding out part. uhm, its a one month old walbro... it's dark so i can't do much right now.

my friend suggested spark plugs, if they are all goobered up, would that by chance cause the lack of start?

If your fuel pump is constantly running with the key on and engine off, then it seems your wiring harness is not wired correctly. The ECU sends a signal to prime it for a certain amount of seconds then it should shut off if the engine is not running.

To check to see if your cylinders are flooding you can run the car for a bit, shut it off, take out the spark plugs for each cylinder and look down the hole with a flash light to see if you see any gas or any other liquid. Gas you can smell quite easily.

Everytime I had an issue with my engine flooding fuel it was either bad injector or bad water temp sensor.

So this morning i went and did some tests. i took out the egi relay, as well as the egi pump relay, AND the fuel pump fuse, and the car continued to prime the engine.so either my ecu is a wack job or the harness i picked up has the fuel pump wired to the ignition.

wth....

would this be why it is having trouble starting??

I would assume if the fuel pump continues to prime and the injectors are not outputting the fuel, the fuel pump life would probably deteriorate rapidly, so I'd run through an S13 SR wiring to KA wiring diagram and make sure all your colors are matching up correctly.

edit: running any type of fuel pump kill switch?

just a quick update. ive been doing some research, and was wondering if this is a possible reason why it would have trouble starting.

since its fuel injected, every time i tap the gas pedal, im letting more air in, not fuel. and because its not starting unless i tap the gas, it means im trying to start it with too much fuel.

That shouldn't be the problem, but you should still fix it.
OK, prime the fuel pump then disconnect the fuel pump harness. then start your car.(do this quickly or with a friend, so you don't loose too much pressure.) If the car starts then it was your problem. I'll show you how to test you fuel pump relay and wire so you can have the ecu trigger it. If the ECU 104 pin isn't fried.

Also 104 triggers the IACV so you can't idle, crack open the throttle a little bit (use the adjustment thingy on throttle body), do this one first

well i worked on my harness for a few hours and i figured out what they wired up to make the fuel pump always prime. so i fixed it, and as you guys called it, i still have the cold start issue. i changed the plugs, no such luck.

two other problems im having:
1)if im at high rmp's and throw it in neutral, the rpm's drop down really low, and sometimes shut the car off.

2)at idle the sr stutters here and there.

any ideas? i have nooo money, so i cant take it in for anyone to look at it...
