The small rubber boot inside of your shift boot is likely to be torn.

the small rubber one that covers right on top of the shifter going into the transmission. below the shift boot and below the rubber "krinkle" boot.

Mine does the same thing randomly. I checked it, my rubber boot has 2 splits, 1 which i believe was supposed to be there and the other seems to have torn over time. Had some oil or some kind of fluid on it so i cleaned it.

thanks for the info guys!

guess i'll have to whip out the fsm and have at it this weekend.
another question: if mine is in fact cracked, is that a part that will typically still be available all the time at the dealers?

Just go to the dealer and buy a "lower shifter boot" it's like $5.

You're thinking too hard.
