Strange Problem with JDM VLSD

hey dudes...I have a JDM VLSD with the 5 bolt output shafts that I was planning on swapping into my 90 hatch that currently has a welded in it. My mechanic took the output shafts out (they came already in it) just to check that everything was good, and then when he went to put them back in, the longer shaft would go about 98% of the way in, and then stop. When it's pushed all the way in there's still like a tiny little 1cm gap.

Has anyone else had this problem/have a solution? I made some sweet MS Paint diagrams to show what I'm talking about. The first one is what it's supposed to look like (we're both actually not sure which output shaft goes on which side, please chime in) and the second is what mine does.

I DID do a search also.

Most likely getting stuck on the c-clip. Pictures would be nice to see exactly whats going on.

In reading up on removal and replacement, I see nothing about actually removing the clips. Do they get removed prior to prying out the half shafts, or is it a spring-loaded slip-fit deal?

(Hope this is within the scope of the OP)
