s13 Peek-a-boo CEL Code 45

Hey guys,

I recently bought a '89 240sx that has cel code 45 on. The previous owner (an older gentleman) said the light intermittently came on. Anyways when i bought it, it had been on the whole time during the test drive and drive home. After doing some basic maintenance on the vehicle I decided to tackle the light. I switched off the light after putting some seafoam in and now the light only comes on when i press on the accelerator. As soon as I let off the accelerator it goes away. Any help would be much appreciated. And yes I did search but couldn't find an answer to this.

Misc. info - original manual, car runs fine doesn't bog down like it's getting flooded, and when i pulled the plugs they were EXTREMELY dirty and black (looked fouled).

Code 45- Leaky Injector CEL

Congratulations on the purchase of your '89 S13. You may want to use the SEARCH function here on Zilvia to locate & download a OEM Factory Service Manual, (FSM), to help you troubleshoot & fix your problem(s) with your car.

Your dirty fouled spark plugs could be due 1). a bad fuel injector(s), 2). A faulty signal from your Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, (or a bad sensor) 3). a Oxygen sensor that is no longer working properly. Your Engine Control Module, (ECM), relies on the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor & the Oxygen sensor to adjust the pulse going to the fuel injectors. If the sensors are bad then the injectors will stay open longer fouling the plugs.

Sounds like you are starting on the right foot with the Seafoam. Seafoam will help clean out the carbon buildup in the combustion chamber along with the crap in the injectors. You may want to do a tuneup on your car by replacing the distributor cap & rotor along with replacing the sparkplugs. You'll also want to use the Factory Service Manual to check the timing and adjust the idle if necessary.

Hopefully by performing this maintenance you'll be able to fix & clear the Check Engine Light from popping on & off as it's doing now.

Hope this helps....

Gonna finish this this thread so it isn't just another half done thread. Already did all the basic maintenance you recommended already at that time and I ended up also changing the fuel injectors and one had a crack in it. So cracked injector was the cause of the light.

Soooo don't hate me too much because I'm bumping this from the dead but just trying to provide some information that I couldn't find at the time I had the car. Sold the car about 3 years ago but didn't want to leave this unfinished.

So i changed the cracked injector and fixed the light about 3 months later I get code 45 again and code 32 (egr). It's an intermittent light that goes on and off. As time passes the light stays on more than it's off and I noticed the colder the time I drove it the higher the likelihood of it being off. Pulled the EGR cleaned it all out, replaced the IACV, changed vacuum lines just trying to figure out what it was. Turns out the accordian section of the intake had a small crack in the valley portion on the bottom and until one day I pulled the intake off I never saw the crack.

TLDR: if you're getting code 45 and 32 on a single jingle and you know the injectors and EGR and MAF are good checking the intake piping for leaks as that'll do it.

Hope that this stupid old thread can help somebody one of these days!
