Questions questions Questions

Hey guys.

So i just purchesed this Beautiful 95 S14 and its a roller.

I would like to put a KA in it and do the auto>manual conversion.
it had the engine, transmission, ecu, driveshaft and wiring harness pulled. I would also like the car to pass smog so i could register it and drive it until i saved up to do the SR swap i have planned for the future. i live in vegas so if it wont pass smog no biggie i can always register it as a classic rod, seeing as it wont get driven except weekends and wont exceed the 5k mile a year limit. thank you company truck and beater car i drive lol.

so here are some of my questions.

1. Would any RWD KA engine work for my 95 s14?
2. does any 5speed transmission work on any RWD KA?
3. how do i tell what year the KA is from?
4. how do i tell what year the transmission is from?
5. i know my 95 is OBD1 does this limit to what years of a KA i can put in?
6. how would i verify what year and engine a ecu is for?
7. is there any problems i would face with putting an s13 KA in my s14?

i think that is all my questions for the moment. thanks for all the help guys

Cool car! Normally I'd yell at you and tell you to search but since you put the thread in the right place and can type somewhat coherent questions I'll play nice...

1. Technically, ya.. but I would try to find an s14 KA
2. Ya, S14 trans has a hole for the crank position sensor but you can just drill that hole in the S13 trans.
3. S13 and S14 KAs have different heater pipe routing so you can tell from that, there's also like one less valve cover bolt on the S14s
4. If it has a hole in the top of the bellhousing, its from an S14.
5. Not really
6. The plug type and color is different from S13 to S14, and OBD1 to OBD2
7. Just the heater core thing.. really, but it would be a lot easier just to source an S14 motor...

Thank you. i have been doing a lot of research and i came up with so many conflicting answers. some saw it all transfers over, some say since im obd1 and s14 im limited to only a 95 engine, harness, and ecu. some say i can get a 95-98 engine but my harness and ecu need to be 95.

its been a but overwhelming, so i figured it post up and see what i get. thank you for the information. i guess i will keep looking for an S14 setup. surely someone has their entire powertrain they will be getting rid of when they do the SR swap.

KAs can swap across, just make use the hardware and wiring for your corresponding year. 95s are a little different from 96. 97-98 are also different as they have even more obd2 stuff from 96. S13s are mostly all the same. The intake manifold, upper engine harness, and ecu would have to be '95 for a straight forward install. You can make use of 96-98 ecus but it would give a bunch of codes since a lot of stuff it would see as missing. S13 KAs have a casting number of 53f on the block where the ac compressor would be located. Casting number are on the back of the head and in between #2 and #3 exhuast ports. S14s were 5C0 on the block and 70f on the head. As mentioned before s13 valve covers have one less bolt in the back of the valve cover, whereas s14s have three in the back. The s13 intake manifolds also had butterfly valves on top of the heater piping being routed different.

Yesssssss this is exactly what i have been looking for. very helpful information. thank you! so i can run any KA i just need the intake manifold upper harness and ecu to be from a 95. thank you for all the casting numbers as well great info.

ok i found one guy selling what he claims is a 95 ka 5speed harness,

and another guy selling what he says is a 95 5 speed ecu. Is there any way visually that i can verify the harness and ecu are in fact from a 95 s14 and they are a manual and not an auto?

thanks for all the casting numbers NiSilS14 very helpfull.

Looks like a clean and solid platform to start with.

1. Would any RWD KA engine work for my 95 s14? Any RWD dual cam KA will "work" as long as the manifolds correspond the chassis and OBD system.
2. does any 5speed transmission work on any RWD KA? All S14 transmission are the same. S13 transmissions lack the crack angle sensor port for OBD operations. However, mechanically an S13 trans will work, you'll just throw an engine code
3. how do i tell what year the KA is from? S13 KA's will have a two port exit leading into the exhaust down pipe. S14 KA's with OBD2 will have many more sensors and wiring for the OBD system on the intake manifold. 95 KA's do not have these. You can google the differences
4. how do i tell what year the transmission is from? Doesn't matter
5. i know my 95 is OBD1 does this limit to what years of a KA i can put in?No, but having an S14 KA is best. If you don't get a 95 KA you'll have to swap out the intake manifold. You'll also need an engine harness from a 95 to make it work
6. how would i verify what year and engine a ecu is for?Google the code on the ECU
7. is there any problems i would face with putting an s13 KA in my s14?You'll need to swap the manifolds. Intake manifold will have to be swapped from a 95 and the exhaust manifold can come from any S14. You'll also need the ECU and engine harness from a 95 as well.

Using 96-98 OBDII engine and ECU is pointless and a headache. The rest of the chassis harness is not wired for it due to emission equipment are near the fuel tank as well.

Another thing to keep in mind is the AC system. I'm not 100% sure about the compressor, but I do know that the 96 and 97-98 years had slight changes in AC lines. You live in Vegas, you'll want AC.
I see a clutch master cylinder. Was the car a 5speed from the factory?
