Auto-X Question

I knwow hat Auto-X is anda ll, but I was wondering. Do you HAVE to ahve a license to partake in it? I know that you don't need insurance but what about license? I'm only 13 but my mom agreed if I can get the money, she'd let me buy 240SX and auto-x it as long as I'm allowed. So I was tryng to figure this out.

Do you need a license for Auto-X?

I believe so. You may be able to speak to your local SCCA region (start w/ their SOLO II Steward) and see if they can make an exception. I know my region has let people auto-x without a license. Generally they're driving formula cars or junior karts, but i suppose anything is possible.

yeah id definitely reccomend looking into the junior kart stuff. ive seen a lot of kids driving around in those at my region's SCCA. if you're driving a real car though, you'll need a license.

You don't need one, but it depends on what organization is running the event. SCCA isnt the only game in town, although it sure seems that way sometimes.

I suggest looking into karting as well. If you are serious about it, you can learn ALOT more about driving in a kart than you can in a car.

Also to add a bit more, karts are cheap

You can get a decent used Birel 125cc shifter for about $1500 or so, and that'll usually come with a number of spare wheels, gear seats, etc. They're easy to work on, very cheap to maintain, and fairly bulletproof.

Find out if there's a kart track near you. Honestly, you'll learn light years more from w2w (wheel to wheel) karting in a much shorter period than you could ever learn from autocrossing. Also, it'll get you set up for real road racing (or solo 1/time trials) for if/when you decide to move away from the cone-dodging in parking lot scene

~matt - addicted to open track events but still autocrosses for fun
