s13 240sx tranny swap

im new to this forum and barely got my 1990 240sx hatchback not to long ago and i was wondering how much it will cost and how hard it is to swap out my automatic transmission to a manual one. Also if anyone is willing to help me accomplish my goal to do so. thanks.

im around the West Covina in the Los Angeles County.

Welcome to the Forums,

Just giving you a heads up though... Most people on here don't spoon feed you info.. you'll probably get flamed too if you post something like this in general chat as well.

Google and the "Search" function on this forum are your friends. You can find the solution to almost any issue through those.

If you google "S13 5 speed swap" you'll get this:

How To: 5 Speed Swap in Convertibles (and other S13s) : 240SX Convertible Forum

I haven't done it yet personally.. but it seems like most people get the tranny and anything else they can find from the junkyard to save on $$. The general consensus for cost to go from auto --> manual seems to be ~$500

thank you. my problem is that i wouldnt know where to start if i do happen to do a tranny swap. i can read it and everything but i dont have the tools and knowledge yet to be able to do that. even if it says in writing what to do.. i dont trust myself enough to just do it myself. so i was wondering if someone in this forum that lives near me and knows how to do it is willing to help me out with it. i really want a 5 speed, but i dont want to sell my car and get a new one.

No problem,

You live near the Nismo Shop (West Covina Nissan) and I think a few other guys on here live out there as well.

I'm sure someone will chime in and help out in exchange for a few $$'s and a six pack soon enough.

Until then just keep reading material online about your car. Before I started browsing here and Nico a few years back I didn't even know how a crankshaft worked

The more you read up on things the more it'll start to make sense.

yeah thats what im trying to do.. im just trying to read up on things so i can understand things better.

theres a shop that can do the swap for me for about 1100, but i think thats kinda too much and is out of my budget for a tranny swap. thats also why i was asking how much it usually would run if i just find the whole tranny at a junk yard or something.

If your able to get someone to help you out here I'd imagine you'd come in under $1,100.

Sourcing parts from the junkyard will land you around $500, and I'd doubt someone dropping by to help out would charge $600 in labor.

GL though, and congrats on the car. I've been trying to pick one up off an on for about 7 years now

go to the s-chassis swapmeet on the 22nd at Sonic Motor. Should be a lot of cheap prices.

What you need to do is start attending meets and...err... meet people
the 626 meet is one of the larger one where a few of the old school heads still attend
I'd start there

meet people, read as much as you can and if you aren't a complete jackass someone will be willing to help

mind you, $1100 is a very fair price
if you consider the amount of work that's involved

go to the junk yards on a 1/2 off day
you could probably get the transmission and pedals for a couple of hundred dollars
I'd get a new master and slave cylinder, flywheel bolts - oem preferably
I'd also go for a new clutch kit - exedy one is pretty cheap

I'd be surprised if you could do all this under $500 imo.
Trust me, I've done and been involved in quite a few swaps and in my experience
it always ends up costing you more if you cut corner and cheap out on parts.

yeah i just need help to get started cos im new to these things and i dont know to get it started.

i was actually willing to do the transmission for 1100 but my bro is the one thats saying that it isnt worth it and i should find a person thats willing to help me find the parts at a junkyard and help me swap it out. I wouldnt mind spending like 700 dollars as a budget to get it done. i just want someone to help me and make sure that its done right.
