Project Desert Storm decomissioned indefinitely... by a bag of concrete

Fate has a cruel sense of humor. On my way back from a canyon run - a run I didn't really want to go on due to crappy front tires but went anyway - I hit this on the freeway at 75mph.

which was for some reason solidified (probably due to the moisture in the air). There were plenty of signs that this run was going to be problematic. A friend was pulled over on the way there, and a police cruiser was sitting at the bottom of the canyon... Alas, I followed through...

The damage so far (what's visible on the side of a freeway with a flashlight):

-destroyed oil pan and oil pump
-bent sway bar
-bent A-arms (possibly front subframe)
-bent rim
-blown tire (falken azenis)
-engine could be fried due to the chunks possibly ingested

The CHP officer explained that if he was to write a report, it would go down as an at-fault accident and I would have a point on my license. I, of course, promptly declined the said report. He said he was sorry for my loss and hoped the damage was minimal. Then, he drove off, but not before telling me that I was lucky, since he recently had a couch-car incident the end result of which wasn't nearly as nice.

Anyone else ever hit anything silly on the road?

Poor Desert Storm

My windsheild is a road debris magnet. After I replace this one, I'll be on my fourth windshield. That's $2000 worth of windshields!! Crazy. First one was from a chunck or truck tire on the freeway. Second one was from my airbags deploying and this third one got a dime sized chip the first day I got it. Another same sized chip a month or so later and at earlier this year caught a rock about 2 inches from the left edge of the drivers side and in the 4 mile drive home the crack spread right through my line of sight and up to the top center of the windsheild. I'm not gonna bother w/ it until I get back from overseas though.

Hm, only thing I hit once was a tire someone had lost on Hwy 5. It was dark and I was in traffic. Driving and suddenly there is boom, tire in the way. Ran right over it.

Integra lives on however.

I've hit a rabbit, a 2x4 and a hunk of tire from a blown retread. None caused any damage, guess I'm lucky.

uhhh, I think the cop lied to you man, how can you hitting a bag of solidified concrete in the middle of the road be an "at fault" accident? Last time I checked, bags of concrete are not supposed to be in the middle of the road, and if it is dark and they are there, it shouldn't be your fault that you hit it...

I would have taken the report anyway, because now you have nothing to prove to your insurance company that you actually did what you said you did.

He said the report would be entered into the computer system, which would add a point to my record. Since its a single-car accident report, the one car involved (mine) is automatically judged at-fault, according to him. If I had seen the car the concrete came from, it would be different. I didn't want to take the risk of points on my license, but I do have paperwork from the towing company describing the damage, several witnesses and I can easily find the cop if I need to. Unfortunately, I don't think it will do any good. I think there's some kind of an assumed risk thing on highways.

Hitting concrete like that must suck. The damage sounds pretty bad too, I feel for you.

Yesterday, I was on the highway and had the window cracked just the slightest bit. The truck infront of me threw up a dime-sized rock and it somehow curved into the window, and somehow hit me in the right eye! I was pissed; had to pull over because my eye was watering so badly. Thankfully, no damage was made and after a few painful hours I can see fine. I've always thought it should be mandatory for ALL trucks and SUVs to have mudflaps, and this is living proof.

I am king of hitting objects not supposed to be in the street. I will always hold this record.
I was delivering pizzas in my first spare car, a 1988 6cyl Chrysler New Yorker, and at about 9pm on a 2 lane major Florida road, US 41, I ran over an automatic transmission from a truck. I initially shattered the bellhousing, which sent gears everywhere. Someone else hit the tranny-mass, and got the torque convertor stuck between an axle and their car body, someone's fuel and another's oil lines were severed by flying gears. There were 4 shattered windshields from flak and shrapnel comming out from behind cars, and a ton more flat tires, paint dings, dents, ect. Also, where I initially hit the transmission, it dug a 10 foot 2" deep rut out of the asphalt and many more chunks taken out further down the road.
Did $5k in damage to a $500 pizza car, so I chucked it. Busted the New Yorker's tranny, smashed the K-frame, bent a rim, sliced through the tire, busted the front swaybar, tore out some PS lines, ruined the front fender, blew the passenger wheel bearing, and dented the passenger floorboard up 4". This was caused by the passenger-side frame rail crumpling.
50 miles per hour. Pitch black. Black oily transmission. The total damage to all cars, from the police (I called just curious on how much the insurance companies were seeking), was just under $30,000 (don't forget road work). Police said they were actively pursuing serial numbers on the fragments to find out whose tranny it was, because all insurance companies (mine included) were going to sue the city and county.
Sucks huh?
-Jeff

heh, that tranny story would be a goddam nightmare....

but anyways, i was driving with my dads friend in his landrover discovery, and we were near this zoo....next thing we know a little fat fuzzball came running out and we nailed it. the first thing he said was "it felt like we hit a bag of cement", we turn around and try to figure out what the hell it was and couldnt, it was nothing we had ever seen before...so we went to the zoo to try and figure it out...

they said it was a wombat that had escaped one of their pens, and they were looking for it, omg they were so horrified and pissed off at us at the same time...its amazing how heavy those dam little bastards are

Ive had the luck of hitting someones spare tire at 45mph that was for some reason bouncing down the center of the highway. luckily me and my friend came out undamaged and i ended up with a broken blinker, foglight, and a scrapped up bumper. glad to see everyone is ok from their little mishaps. 240's seem to attract road debris.

i was getting a ride home with my brother once about...7 years ago i think, and all of a sudden i see this black thing and the car gets hit on my door. at first i thought it was a motorcyle or something, but it turns out a navy truck had lost a giant tire off the back, and it was rolling down the freeway. the pass. door was smashed, and the window shattered (still held together by the tint though). navy paid for it i think, i dont recall. few inches off and i might not be here today, haha.

A survery way released awhile back, In california more then 50% of accidents are due to road conditions not the driver. Sucks my friend was driving around a bend on a hill and hit some loose gravel due to construction work and Totaled his 86 250 feet down... Sorry but it happens

Not a 240 story, but I was riding my motorcycle down a country road and a gravel truck came flying onto the road from a side street and as he straightened out the back gate came loose spilling gravel all over the road. Yall ever dropped a rock out of a car at 50mph? It bounces, alot. Well, that's what the gravel did, like being in a shooting gallery. Ended up losing control and laying the bike down at like 35mph. Fortunately a state trooper was coming down the road and saw the whole thing and stopped the truck driver who turned out to be drunk. His company paid for everything.

jeff240 : holy crap! best 'i hit something on the road story' ever...

back when i had my camry, i was driving behind an impala on the nj turnpike. in front of us was a smallish SUV with two bikes on the roof. well, i guess that guy didn't tie them down properly, cuz one of them slid right off the rack at 70mph. the impala swerved wildly but managed to run right over the bike and spun onto the shoulder. i was lucky and cut into the adjacent lane. because of that i never drive behind anything with shit mounted on it... vans with ladders, cars with bikes, etc. ur basically trusting ur life to a stranger, betting that he mounted that stuff properly. btw the suv just drove off, either didnt notice or didnt care.

Anyone else ever hit anything silly on the road?
driving home from a hockey game @ Clemson (I played for NCSU B-team) and I (and 3 teammates and our hockey equipment in the trunk ) were driving back north on I-85 in (used to be) my Audi (1990 90, 5-speed FWD 5-cyl). Pulled into the left lane to pass a few cars, a tad later the SUV in front of me kinda jerked a tad, and I saw a FREAKING WHEEL (with tire mounted on it and everything) just LAYING in the center of the lane. concrete barrier to my left, cars I was passing to my right. SUV evidently had enough ride height to clear the wheel, my car didn't. As soon as I saw it, I jumped on the brakes, didn't have much time, and I tried letting off the brakes right before I hit it to try to bring the nose back up to see if it might clear. It didn't Dented and cracked the oil pan, tore up some brackets and heatshielding under the car, popped the left rear tire. Fortunately we were about 30 mins from the exit you'd take to get to my parents house at the time (near Charlotte) so they were able to bring the van out, and bring my friends back to our house (me steering the Audi in tow with a tow rope) so I could borrow theirs until my new oil pan came in.

and we never found out where the wheel came from either. And while we were sitting on the side of the highway waiting for parents to show up (watching all the oil drain onto the shoulder ), about 3 other cars and a pickup with a trailer stopped on the shoulder near us from hitting the wheel too. One guy just had a flat, the trailer was just bent a little, and one car (Maxima?) had it's muffler ripped off.

Sorry for the lost man, my girlfriend hit a facking bigass roll of carpet on the freeway because some fack didn't bothered to tie it down. Frame was cracked at the seams near the strut towers, we junked the car. Now I drive her around

Lets see, the weirest thing I've ever hit on the road was a ladder in my old truck, i dragged it for a second and then ran over it, it shot out from underneith the front tires and hit the skid pans and just kept on going and the rear tires jumped over it with no problem, i pulled off at the next exit and came out with a broken rung jammed between the transfer case and the frame. No other damage

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss... This is one of many reasons why I HATE cali freeways...

My friend and I ALMOST hit a chest of drawers with clothes sitting on the 134... First day i got the S14 I almost hit a GIANT tractors wheel that fell of the back of a 18 wheeler... not to mention all the misc crap thats ALWAYS strewn across the freeways, and not to mention the huge potholes in the 5 and 210 freeways...

My dad had an air force dump truck of glass pieces open up on him on the freeway...
