SR sr20det whinning sound, like supercharger.

I have this very high pitched whinning sound from the front of my engine. It happens no matter if the car is cold or warmed up, gets louder when rpm increases. I thought it was my tranny low on fluid so I checked and it was low, filled it up and still have whinning sound. Opened my hood and noticed the sound is the loudest from the front of the engine area, either the crank pully or alternator, heck or water pump. Not sure what would cause this sound, like the title says, it sounds like a high pitched supercharger whine. Can this be the Alternator going bad, water pump, or something worse? Any info would help.

the sound does not get worse when I turn the wheel, it only gets louder if I bring the rpm's up. is there any way to quickly check if its the water pump or the alternator or if its something else.

Ok so its not my steering pump. The sound is louder by the crank pully, my front main seal is leaking could that cause the bearing in the pully to make this whining sound? It getting worse and louder, need to find the cause asap. Any suggestions?

hey blu808, any way to 100% find out if it is the oil pump, I'd hate to buy a pump and do all that work for the sound to be there again.

Ok I ended up taking the car to a guy on the Nico forums that works on 240's. He noticed that my front main seal is leaking bad and said most likely the cause for this sound is the front main seal. He is gonna replace it on Thursday or Friday, hopefully this fixes the problem, but need to do it anyway so bonus if it does fix the sound.

Yeah, I'm also getting oil up to the cams so doubt its the pump...ok, hope its not the pump but yeah I've had this sound for a while now and my engine would have died long ago if that was the case.

I've done the poor mans stethoscope, long screwdriver, on the alternator and I'm not hearing the noise.

that will only tell you if the bearing or pulley is bad. if it is the windings inside the alternator, the screwdriver wont tell you. if you have a friend with the same car, borrow his, swap them, and the noise should be gone.

LOL, I actually already purchased a used sr20 alternator, I'll get it tested and if that one is good I will probably just install it. Thanks for the info Jspeedm.
