Starter and sparks

Need help!!!!!! Initially the problem was the terminal broke off from the starter and the positive cable. I was able to strip the cable and put in a new terminal. (I feel a little iffy on how well I crimped the terminal to the cable). It was a struggle attaching the terminal back on to the starter and fitting in the nut, but I was able to. As I was putting the negative cable back onto the battery negative post, it created little sparks. There is no power within the car if I leave the negative cable on. It seems that if I move it around (trying secure the negative clamp) is when it creates sparks, not when it's sitting on the negative post on the battery. (I can leave the negative clamp on the battery negative post with no sparks). Is there anything I did wrong?
