Ky S13.5 Ground up build

Here is a summary of my build thread from my local car forum. Since I have made a lot of progress I figured I would share with every one here. Enjoy!

It has been about 8 years since I bought my first 240SX

Day 1 picture was about 6/4/04

As a young guy I realized that a rolling project was impossible. so I picked up a slightly worn s13 project to bring back. It turned into a rusty parts car over time. and has since been cut up and thrown away.

Drive train, and various other parts donor.

pic about 6/2006

What was left of the donor after I cut it up in a Autozone parking lot.

So as the years have gone by and i got my hands on deals here and there. I am finally at a point where i am ready to get the project painted.

This is what the current project looked like when i picked it up. There was no rust at all and was a great price.

3/13/11

Leaving me to head to the painter 3/14

small update as of 3/30

This came in on 4/04/11

So many months went by and I had not seen my car for while. My wife and friends were urging me to lay eyes on my car, just to make sure it was still around. I drove over to the shop before work and snapped some pictures. All the body panels are being worked on else where, I was told.

9/06/11

9/07/11 Talked to my painter, all the body panels are painted ready to go. Including the fenders, doors, bumpers, side skirts, and the 50mm over fenders. just the shell will need to be finished. He sent me this one photo for an up date on some of those parts.

10/04/11

10/10/11 Well she is back home. I am going to assemble the car in to a running shape and attach all the panels. Then I will drive it back to him and he is going to a line all the body panels and go over the car again to even out the paint. So this weekend if I can find the time, I am going to go through the motor I have for it. I know i will need to replace some seals, and gaskets ect ect. I want to have it running on its own 2 legs in about a month to have the body finished off. Then I will work on the mountain of other stuff for the car.

3/7/12 Well many delays have stopped me from working on this. Mainly working on other peoples cars, and even building another 240SX for some one else. can not complain I am making money. But in the last couple of weeks I have had a little bit of time I could get to work on this. I will post more as I go. I pretty much have all my parts lined out for this project. Just short a few minor things to pick up.

3/13/12 Here what I did Friday. I would have done more but dual ear infection and upper respiratory infection was making me feel like crap, so I did nothing the rest of the weekend. Crappy cell pictures but meh not that important.

3/13/12 My 300ZX rotors were really rusty from sitting out side by the previous owner. they each took an acid bath, followed by a sodium bicarbonate bath. here is a before and after on the front rotors.

All four cleaned up

All four painted to stop any further rust till I am ready to use them.

couple things came in the mail too

Here is a few shot of getting the tempary KA together.
this morning when I got started

How I left it when I went to bed at 10 or so.

How it sits right now. Almost done with it...

Doing work

Here is a little more progress

And few more parts. Matching Gauge set, and a rare no longer produced Nismo key.

4/23/12 well as always had some things keep me from getting to my project. last 2 weekends I have been working on my baby sister's first car/beater. She picked up an S13 Hatch that was in need of some work. I have it drivable, and was able to put in a little work on mine this weekend.

All I did here was line up the fender with the passenger door leaving the front loose to adjust with the bumper and hood. the fender is pretty dusty.

Drilled out holes on my rear quarter and installed Jack nuts and allen head screws with finishing washer. I like the way it turned out. Th hardware will end up getting a coat of paint.

couple more angles

other side for comparison

12/6/13 when this post was completely altered. Little out of order for the above 1st post, and added much later than when I first made this post. but I wanted to show you little bit more of my starting point with this car. Here are some pictures of before I owned the car I was able to pick up from the previous owners photobucket.

The old interior above. Very little of this came with the car and even less ended up being usable. I could not even tell you what actually made it into the car since I have cut up more than a few S13's and I have a good amount of interior parts laying about.

As you can see all the wiring had been pulled and placed into the spare tire well. I ended up not using any of it. I went with an all option SE 5speed Coupe interior harness, Base model 5speed Hatch engine room harness, and a Super HICAS Upper & Lower engine harness. Surprisingly every thing that is hooked up works with exception of the power locks. I also lack the cruise control wiring but I don't really care. I have an entire S13 harness that is from a Loaded S13 5speed Hatch, but I am not swapping it in any time soon. I will be hanging on to it for a rainy day though.

Above is how the motor looked apparently during it's previous owners tear down. I never seen it in that condition. It looked as it does in the pictures below.

The reason it died...

The first place this project called home with me was this storage unit that they kindly let me use as a garage. While I was grateful to have a sheltered space, it sucked. Not that my tight spaced garage is way better, I don't have to drive 15 min to get to it.

Post from 9/12/12

Here Is my First conversion harness for the headlights and turn signal. I made a revised version so I can run High and low beams. For those of you who don't know a ton about Nissans S15 head lights in general there is a 3 pin plug for the turn signal on the S15 headlights is incredibly hard find on USDM Nissans, and tracking them down from over seas takes a little while. So if you are looking for a pair PM me and we can work some thing out.

9/4/12 Here is a crappy Iphone picture with the hood on.

I have every thing hooked up, other than the cat back exhaust. I am missing a bracket to mount the muffler on. At this point it should run. But I am not getting a signal to my fuel pump. I did not have time to trouble shoot it too much. I Know my pump is good, and my fuse is good. I need to check continuity of the wires and test the relay. I am hoping it is the relay that is an easy fix as I have tons of them laying around. I am not in the mood to pull the entire harness from my parts car, even though I really want to.

9/4/12 9am EST IT LIVES!!!!

Turns out the fuel pump relay was bad, easy fix. It was loud as a tank with no cat back exhaust on it. Brings me back when I had to run open header on my old 89 s13. One of the first start ups. Running open header, seems like bit of a miss, and using unknown age fuel. I am aiming to pump out the old fuel this weekend, change the spark plugs, and hang the stock exhaust if the bracket comes in the mail by then. Then mounting the body panels on. Should be down hill from here as long as the painter does his end faster this time around.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEAbMEIrkn4[/QUOTE]

9/10/12 Here is are the custom hood hings I made from s13, S14 hinges. They put the hood in a good starting point, but I need to notch them for perfect placement. It is about 1/8 inch back, and I had to add spacers to raise the hood on the hinges.

Here is a mock mount to see what I need to trim on the bumper for the FMIC

Crappy cell pic for the bumper placement. I will get a better one as soon as the bumper is mounted.

5/29/13

So Life has been in the way of making much progress on this project of mine. Kids, fixing/building/rebuilding other peoples cars, ect. However I cleared enough time to finally put in more work. It is ready to send back to paint to have the shades evened out. I am aiming to have it 90% complete with my current parts on hand for I.A. at the KY Speedway this July. It will still be rocking the pokey NA KA. The Boost will be a winter project.

What brand fenders are you using? They fit surprisingly well for S15 conversion fenders. Did they come like that or did you have to mess around with them to get the fitment right?

The fenders are a Masa brand very rare, very expensive. These came off one of the Enjuku drift cars from what I am told. Under the blue paint is red paint. Only thing i needed to do was bolt them on. Did not use factory bolt locations though. I drilled and then installed jack nuts. took very little effort to line it up.

Only thing better I think would be to get S13/S15 welded metal fenders.

Where did you get them from? I found a pair on rhdjapan for ~$420, which isn't too bad for fenders if they're already properly fitted. Do you know if Enjuku modified the fenders or did it seem like they came with alternate bolt locations from the factory?

From my understanding they are hand made by the fine craftsmen with masa in japan and fitted to a 180SX for quality control. $420 sounds right but then the cost of proper packaging and shipping over seas will jump the cost up. I was quoted about $800 in total cost as I recall. These fenders were on Zilvia, the FS thread was very old with no interest when I found it. I contacted the previous owner not expecting them to be around. Turned out he still had them and shipped them to me at a fair price. The only modification I found were 2 small holes that are covered up by side skirts, my guess they were for zip ties. I was unable to use any factory mounting points with the holes pre-drilled in the fenders. But I was completely fine with drilling more hole into my body at that point to add the jack nuts in. I will get some pictures where they mount up under the hood.

I have revised my headlight plug and play Harness for the S13. I wanted the Low beams to stay on at the same time the High beams are on, but I wanted to use the factory wiring to avoid adding more relays, and to cut down on work in general. The first plug and play harness the low beam would shut off when the brights were put on. So now I have a V2 plug and play harness lined out. I Will be soldering it up tonight while at work and I will post pictures of the final product once finished.

As promised I just completed my revised version of the S13.5 headlight/turn signal harness(s) Now I can run the low beams while the high beams are on as intended.

Here is a light socket that will fit in the OEM S15 Side markers/repeaters with no modifications needed to either the socket or the marker. I need to wire it up for plug and play as well. It will most likely be used as a side marker instead of a repeater.

I can do this for an S14 too.

I decided to give Plasti Dip a chance for some of the old faded plastic's on the interior and other exterior parts of the car. I Did a few test pieces to see if I would like it. Here we go with the before and after. All the before is how they looked from the spot they were stored in. I cleaned them with soap and water as the only prepping. Allowed them to dry before coating them. the floor kick panel and the window trim both have 4 coats. The speaker plastic has 3 coats. May go with 3 coats on the rest of the plastics to save on materials. It seems to have a low odor after it dried so far, but I am going to leave the smaller parts in my daily driver for a week or so to test how much odor the plasti dip puts off.

Today I did half a 5 lug swap. Tomorrow I will do the other half. You can see a huge change in the car's stance with the new wheel tire combo. I will post the finish 5 lug swap tomorrow. The car should also be headed back to paint on Monday, or Tuesday, but that could change.

Just a heads up. The side marker on the fender for the S15 is actually a side repeater. As in, it mimics the flash of the turn signal. You will want to splice into your turn signal harness and connect to the side repeater accordingly.

I could do that and set it up so my running light in the headlight does not flash any more. That will probably happen after it comes back from paint.

Finished up the 5 lug swap, did not get any photos of the other side yet. Was a very busy day. My little gear head helped me out on changing the fuel lines.

If you are talking about the 3 pin plug I have had no luck tracking a part # down. But I did have some clipped from s15's over seas by a guy who shipped me a small clutch of them. I make the plug and play harness for them, or sell the running/turn signal 3pin plugs along with a pair of 2pin plugs for the low beams. The high beams use a 9005 bulb that you can pick up a new plug for $7 ish each at a parts store. Pm me if you want a set of low beam, and turn/signal plugs.
