No, do not cut the plastic. Three things to look at before upgrading to LED bulbs bro.
1) How did you splice the two wires (power and ground) for each harness? When you step on the brakes are they brighter?

2) Did you cut the holes on the tail lights to match the harness? Does the bulb look like it's too far away from lens?

3) Swap out the tail light bulbs with a bulb from either front orange side marker or corner light to see if there is a difference. If there is, just pick up a cheap set of these bulbs.
Here is a picture of my tail light with a stock bulb.

ok...just checked everything, it doesnt go brighter when i brake, i changed the bulb...same thing, and yea i dont think its too far away...it sits fine in the plastic! I reckon its something to do with the red plastic ( where the bulb illuminates) . Its a very thick red with little dots...not clear at all...i dont think the UK lights were meant to have these?!

hmmm....

Here is a picture of a USDM Zenki tail light.

It appear to be a little more transparent. Instead of modifying your existing lens, maybe you can pick up a set of USDM Zenki tail lights or better yet a clean set of Kouki tail lights. The Zenki tails are pretty cheap here in the states.

Hmm...cant remember what I did with my old Zenki tails. Shoot me a PM so I'll remember to check if I still got em. I should even have the plugs for side markers since I'm now using JDM Kouki tails.
