KA24DE Problem... Came from nowhere.

I was driving my car the other day..headed home. Well my oil light flashed on and has i was making the corner went off. Well im almost home and the miles per hour start dropping and at first i just thought maybe my foot was to relaxed so i gave it a lil gas and the mph still dropped. Then i heard some sort of scraping type bullshit from the engine bay..not to loud but definetly noticeable.

I turned onto my road and the car died. I get it home and try to turn the key and the motor acts like it wants to crank but just wont. I check the oil dipstick and it is almost bone dry. To my knowledge the car has no oil leaks anywhere.

Anybody have any idea? Should i just drain all the crappy oil out and replace with new oil and give it another shot or is there something seriously wrong with her?

Car is a 1997 s14..motor has given me absolutely no problems till this. It has about 130k miles on the motor. Its also an auto if that matters.

Thanks for any help.

When was the last time you changed or checked the oil before this?

sounds like you had a leak and let it run dry or you were burning oil very fast.

If your engine was run dry enough to lose power and make scraping noises and now it won't start, you need to rebuild it.

i agree with what murda-c said. if there was a scraping sound u probably need to rebuild it because bad noises from inside ur engine are usually correlated to damage.

it would be better to rebuild it just in case before u try to crank it up again, because if u crank it up and whatever was scraping isnt inspected/fixed ur gonna ruin ur engine completely if its not already

have you drained the oil yet?

check the oil for metal particles.

If it looks sorta like glitter paint, you're going to need some kind of rebuild.

Open the valve cover and check the cams out.

http://www.zeroyon.com/index/content/view/24/47/

get a factory service manual from there for torque specs and sequences if you want to take the cam caps off and look at those journals.

Just for you, not sugar coated.

If you go to a stealership for a rebuild it will be around 2500-3000 plus labor. So 4k+

If your motor is reusable/doesn't have a ruined crank
If you can pull and reinstall the motor your self and put the head and timing stuff on........

Figure around $1000 For(timing kit, oil and water pumps, thermo, gasket sets, bearings other random things)
$500 the engine work(machine shop, assembly....)
If you damaged your cylinder walls add 3-400

Used KA
Under $500 plus the cost of fluids and what ever maintance you want to do to it before you put it in.

You would be better off buying a used KA and swapping it in. You can find them for 300-600 dollars.

try here http://www.importperformanceparts.net/. The prices are reasonable and shipping is fairly fast. The kits they offer come with all of the gaskets needed, bearings, and piston rings. They also have varying levels of their rebuild kit, which include pistons and rods, new timing components, oil pump, etc etc.

Honestly, rebuilding a motor is intimidating, but just take your time remember where things go, get a fsm, obviously and it's pretty much cake. If you dont feel comfortable a machine shop will do it, if you give them all of the parts for maybe 300$ or so.

one thing to learn about cars, always expect the worst cause if it comes out to be, you wont be as dissapointed.

Yea i think this bitch is pretty much toast. Im not even gonna try to rebuild it. No KA is worth getting into the thousands of dollars to have fixed imo.
