6 speed problems :/

Hey guys I'm new here, I've found lots of useful stuff here already but I'm having trouble trying to figure this out. I recently got a 97 kouki with a S15 SR and the 6 speed manual. I had to throw a little money into it but it drives great now and pulls hard. My problem is that sometimes when the cars standing still, like at a light or something, it will not go into first gear! If the car rolls like an inch it will go right in. It also does this with reverse but it's a lot worse in reverse. I've bled the clutch lines and it helped a little but it's still doing it. Any ideas on what it could be? Also when I'm driving already the car shifts smooth like silk. It only happens when I sit still. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys!

tranny fluid?

Mine had a SUPER hard time going into first, had to slam it in, but after a good tranny flush it shifts like butter.

Yeah I flushed my transmission too and put royal purple gl4/5 fluid back in it and it didn't help much

Maybe broken 1st gear synchro or broken 1st gear . I changed my first gearbox because of that, had trouble getting in 1st and reverse. turned out the pignons were dead.

When clutches are ready to go bad it makes it harder to put the car in first or reverse. Definitely explains why if it moves a little bit there's no problem. But you said it pulls hard.

Are you still running that clutch dampener? take that sonuvabitch out.

start in second and run it through the gears 2-3-4-5-6 then back to first, it might help. almost all manual tranny cars ive owned have had their stubborness going into first or reverse sometimes

Thanks for all the help guys! I'm going to try everything you suggested and I hope it helps. First I'm gonna take off the clutch dampener and flush my tranny again. I don't think the clutch bad because it only has about 8K miles on it.

The 6 spd is notoriously known to be weak, so that may be a good idea.

Have you tried flushing your transmission fluid yet? Get some good MT fluid, and replace your old stuff.

Do this or else. You need 3 quarts of MT-90 (you won't use all of it though).

Try Amsoil GL-4 MT-Fluid. If that doesnt make your tranny better, nothing will.

plus 1 on draining that fluid out of your trans asap.
even if it is a GL4/5 blend, its still no good and harmful to yellow metals.
other than special orders, Napa is the only place i found that readily stocks GL4.
its by stalube.

+1 The full synthetic Amsoil GL-4 is the shit. Once it warms up it makes my crunchy 2nd gear shift like butter.

Its very annoying how hard it is to find GL4. Napa, Oriley, and Autozone all say they can't buy it because GL4/5 have replaced it and GL4 no longer exists. Complete bs and it leaves only online ordering in my area.
