s13 Won't start after head gasket change

94 s13 KA24DE


Cams are in the same place as before, lobes on cyl. 1 (closest to rad) pointing opposite, TDC set, at second notch from the top of the crank pulley.

Distributor set same as previous, which lined up similar to where it was before disassembling. SIMILAR isn't good enough, why wouldn't it line up? I tried all of the teeth, it will not line up exactly with cyl. no. 1's corresponding plug wire.

Anyway, I played with the distributor timing a little bit, and I eventually got it to fire up! 200rpm, tons of misfires, rev'd to 3000 when i gave it some gas, then when i let go it shut right off.

When I unplug the fuel pump fuse, it tries to start a little bit. Shortly after plugging it back in it doesn't even want to fire.

I read all around the forums, others have had similar issues but nothing worked for me.

Any ideas??

Every time you start it with the timing off, it's flooding. To clear the chambers out, pull the fuel pump fuse, crank it, put the fuse back in, and start again.

Also are you sure you've tried all the teeth? It took me several tries to get my dizzy right, I kept stabbing it to the teeth on either side. Remember the dizzy rotates as it slides in.

Okay, that makes sense that it floods when the timing is off.. because it's not starting and fuel is unburnt.. haha that solves that problem that I should have already known.

Now, when it did start, after I killed it (like as I was taking the key out..), it would still fire one last cylinder. Maybe I'll try to move the distributor up one instead. I thought it was two behind, so I tried moving it two that way. I'll try moving it up, then. Haven't tried that yet.

Obviously my cams are in correctly, since my valves still work. lol

YES! absolutely, lol. I pulled out the sparkplugs, and I poured oil into the engine, then turned it a good few times slowly to make sure all was well

messed with it again today, still no sign of wanting to start. CAms are right im pretty sure.

check this... if your certain your cams are set right put the distibutor in as close as you can get it (#1 piston TDC, distibutor set at #1 position) then hook the timing light up and see what it does...

if the lower slipped a notch, the piston would be coming up a link too early, meaning the exhaust and intake are a notch too late or vice versa. yes it matters

spark fuel and air, timing must be 100% right however

kit for what? lol

I made a thread for the kit. But I feel like that will not solve my problem, which is why i posted it. so people would give input on that
