s13 S13 Automatic shifter problem

89 s13 stock sohc automatic
My car started acting up last week, it wouldn't start unless I put pressure on the shifter pushing it towards park. I would turn the key and nothing would happen at all, if i turn the key then put pressure it would start. this morning it wouldn't start at all. I have power, my windows roll down and the radio works. I took apart the shifter and the pin is pushing the parking sensor back, but I noticed the white box to the right of the shifter gets really hot. I'm going to get a shifter from pick a part tomorrow, but I was just curious if anyone had a similar problem? Is there something else I should check?

I did use the search button and didnt see any threads with a similar issue

Isn't the neutral safety switch only on manual cars?

it's the neutral safety, it's to prevent you from starting the car in reverse or in a forward gear... it's probably something in the mechanical portion if it works when you apply pressure, it's possible it bent and is now broken after applying extra pressure

According to projectRDM there is no neutral safety switch?

Nissan does not use that type of setup..

Automatics will not start out of park. I've tried in neutral.

ProjectRDM was wrong. There is a Neutral safety switch. I bypassed it at the connection under the fuse box on the passenger side in the engine bay.

Yup you should be able to start any auto car in neutral or park so long as your switch isn't busted like the one in this thread. I do it all the time in my auto. of course I've seen the sensor when it's in park be bad but work in neutral
