Does anybody own a 240/silvia with an FJ20ET swap????
Just had a thought of some great old school Nissan engines (FJ20et being one of them). I do realize it is an old school hard to find engine, but in many ways would put the SR20det to shame.
Has anyone done this swap into a Silvia or 240sx? Anybody have any swap pics of this engine in an s chassis? I would just like to drool over something different than an SR, CA, or KA. Just for reference for those that don't know what engine I,m talking about.. http://www.fj20.com/ I believe Mark Ashford of Australia used a 1997 200sx (s14) FJ20et and runs 7.86 seconds in the 1/4mile..... Why is it the aussies get a hold of these engines more than us americans????? |

Hell yeah any info would be great. I've been researching this engine for a while and it has many similarities to the KA. Making it a relatively simple engine to work on (for myself), and much more rev happy than the KA or SR..... More rev happy than SR because there are less moving valve train parts used on the FJ. Titanium retainers and springs with buckets are the way to go!!!!!! |

FJ's were awesome engines in their day. Used extensive in Nissan racing here and Japan. Powered the champion winning Nissan trucks in the SCORE off road series. They even had a FJ24. Problem is its a heavy engine and Nissan no longer makes a lot of the parts for it.
The reason Australia has these engines and parts is because the R31 Skyline came with the FJ20ET engine. It was also available in top of the line 200sx's aka Silvia's in the non turbo version. It was Nissan first production 4 cylinder twin cam. Of course they had the 6 cylinder twin cam 2 liter as far back as 1970 aka the S20. Though the NA FJ was a 4 cylinder that put out only 25 hp less than a S20.

Well anyway's assuming that the FJ's are still abundant in Australia, it appears that I will be looking long and hard for an Australian importer of this engine, and hopefully can get it cheaper than an sr20det...... Wanted a KA with a fully counter weighed crank but thats not going to happen any time soon and the FJ20et looks like the next best thing (indestructable cast iron block, forged internals, and a fully counterweighed crank, with a bucket valve train achievable of a 9000 rpm REDLINE......... Looking at the wiring and engine setup I could run a stock CA18det ecu and run it on individual coils, or get it wired for Biki. Rod stroke ratio's as well as cam durations are all consistent with that of the CA and KA engines. Oh well it's still all up in the air, but still a nice thought. Just sucks I see alot of dimequarterly dudes out here at the shasta meets with FJ20et's in the 510's, but none in 240sx's. |

I would not consider the LZ completely a real Nissan engine. Seeing as it was designed with OS Giken, strictly for competition use and was never a production line engine. It was basically a modified L series engine. It was only designed one year before the FJ. Which was a good ten years after the existance and production of the S20. The first real production Nissan Dual cam four was and still is the FJ20. Anyways the S20 was years apart from either the LZ or the FJ.

I had an FJ20 Skyline when I was a youngin' tuned to about 300PS. It was quite a fun car and a pretty bullet proof motor.

Back in the early 80's, before the 240 and the 86 my eldest brother used to drift datsuns(mostly 510's) and his prize piece had a FJ20 in it. I wont lie and pretend to know anything about it, but at the little meets and getogethers people flocked to see under his hood. I was like 10 and just happy to tag along.

Since you have so much knowledge on importing engines how hard would it be for you to get me one of these bad boys???? If you can't would I be able to talk to some one at TEAK-IT performance of Australia and see what I could do to get an engine through them.. I haven't been able to find TWEAK-IT's web address either would you have it, because I could really use there number for ITB parts anyways........ EDIT: never mind I found there web address.... http://www.tweakit.net/shop/ This is the only shop I know of that has the modified RB30et, and sometimes on occasion FJ parts. |

There used to be pallet stacks of L series engines nearly the size of skyscrapers back in the day in Japan. They are all gone. FJ's were not produced in nearly the same kind of numbers as say L18 SSS engines which Nissan stuck in Taxi's, Police cars, Bluebirds, base model Fairladys etc.... Or normal L16's and L18's in trucks and everything else under the Nissan sun

Ill ask him about that. His name is MIKE, dont know if youd remember him. He always looked funny driving those little cars being a 6'1" 220lb white guy. Im trying to get him back in game, the way he drives my 240 is insane skill.

The FJ was a fantastic engine, both the ET and the very rare and powerful Nismo FJ24 in the 240RS rally cars and homologated street cars.
Back in a time when Nissan was turbocharging basically all of its performance cars it was somewhat of an unconventional choice to use a stroked naturally aspirated motor for the rally program, especially when the little Bluebirds and later Skylines all ran turbocharged engines in whatever touring car series they competed in. So if an FJ20 is rare, one built with the Nismo stroker kit and carbs is definitely damn near impossible to find.
