High Compression VG30DE
so I just bought my NA z32 a couple months ago. I've been planning this build before i even bought the car but i thought i'd try to get some feedback/opinions on it before i start buying parts.
seems most of the engine builds/modifications i see people doing to their NA's are twin turbo conversions. it's a nice idea, i thought about it, but i've decided to build a higher compression NA so i can be reliable with a bit more power. the plan thus far is going 11.5:1 compression forged pistons and port/polished heads w/ new lifters. (obviously with strong performance gaskets/seals too) in addition to the build i also want to run a performance ECU. are there any others that have done this exact build or something similar? the key here is getting the parts for this build while reasonably keeping costs down. let me hear your thoughts!

if it was on a s chassis it would probably be quick. unfortunately a z32 weight about 700lb more.

2. i bought a Z cause i wanted a big boy car, if i wanted to do that to an s chassis then i would've been better off just keeping my DSM, and building it. plus z32s look 100X better than any year s chassis imo...

I don't know much about the Z32, but would swapping in a VQ35 be any easier than building a high-comp VG30?
The VQ should be significantly lighter with 60hp more in stock form. |

i also decided on just building the VG as opposed to the VQ because i wanted to keep the luxuries like my A/C etc... but if i can have everything functional by building a VQ then i'm in!

o boy this will cost u a lot of money. i knew a guy doing a n/a build and it cost him a lot of money and still wasnt very fast. with high comp head work ect it will still make less than a stock turbo will make. heres a link that will show u what a ecu, intake, exhaust, clutch/fly wheel will get u..... not even 200hp. NA Z pack its a cool idea and i say go for it, but if your not willing to spend some big money i say run away.

thanks everyone for the feedback. ill probably end up doing the TT swap then.
i get that it would be a waste of money on a z32, but why would anyone do that to a 240sx when an sr20 swap is easier, cheaper*, and will end up with more power in the end?? and even if you didn't want a cookie-cutter SR20, doing a VG swap to a 240 makes no sense at all given the other options with the platform. ie: LS1, SR20, RB, KA-T etc... just my 2 cents.

im saving for the same thing dude. i had an s13 and well it was fun but i wanted a 300zx but i dont want turbo power i want na power. i really dont care if its as fast as other cars i want the experience to be fun. and in my opion you cant beat the feeling a built all motor build gives you.

if you want that kind of build and have lots of questions to ask, then hit up the guys at simtecmotorsports.com. they are a z tuning shop with years of experience. if i'm not mistaken, they have a fully built n/a that pushes around 425hp.

these cars are turds in N/A form. like the guy said above, swap in a tt. you aren't ever gonna get over or near 250 to the wheels even after spending two grand. get a twin turbo swap, make 350 - 400 with small bolt ons. just make sure whatever you do, do it right the first time. these cars are a bitch to work on.

I think your better off turbocharging the VG30DE then messing with a full TT swap. The stock DE is plenty strong, if I recall from recent research almost all internal parts are the same. Even if there are some differences it will hold up to 400+ hp anyway which is probably plenty for most folks.

Will be good on acceleration/throttle response.. But won't be a TT. The pistons and heads have their differences...Not to mention a few other differences, but you get the point

Statements like that are born from the internet rumor machine, not from fact.
Probably better. Convincing argument.

You can swap in a VQ and still keep all of your auxiliary / luxury components no problem. You can also use the UpRev / Osiris setup to tune the VQ35 while keeping the cost down. Another advantage to going VQ35 is upgrading to drive by wire.
