Just Welded My Differential **PICS**
We had an extra open Differential sitting around, so we tried to weld it. This was our first attempt at this. We decided to weld a steel rod in the gears on both sides. Looks pretty rough, but do you guys think it will hold up? and not break?
Side 1: Side 2: What are your guys opinions on this? and i know i know, i asked for it. |

you need to pull the gear assembly out of the housing and clean the shit out of it before you try to lay a bead on it, it looks like you just drained it and started welding, from what i can see it didn't burn in at all, another problem with welding it in the housing is that all the buckshot and slag that came off while you were welding will be floating around in you're diff and possibly get into the bearings or chew up the main gear or even seize it up, i wouldn't even try to drive on that thing, i'd get another and start over save urself the headache of it breaking and leaving you stranded, not trying to be a dick or anything just speaking from experiance, i've done 5 of them all of which including my own have been tracked several times and all of them are still in perfect working order

i know it looks like shit. I just want it to hold up. I myself did not weld it. My Uncle did. He said there was little surface to weld on or something. and plus the arc kept jumping around. We drained it. and cleaned it out with brake cleaner. then stuffed it with rags and taped up the main gear so no slag crap would stick to that. I'm going to take a magnet and try to clean up the chunks inside the housing. I have never taken the gear assembly out. I was afraid of not getting it back in. Right now the gears rotate freely. ehhh.... whats the worst that could happen? broken drive shaft, transmission, axles, dead chiuaua on the side of the road. Me losing control and sliding through a park killing a family.

Did you use a fucking flux core weld on that shit? Major slag bro, major slag. Your going to have to get in there with a dremel die grinder and a wire wheel and really clean that shit up.
That bolt thing was completely unnecessary, I would actually be scared to drive on the track with something like that. You could of done a 12 point bead weld. Or do what I do with high HP rigs and bead weld every spider gear tooth.

omg well theres the problem my friend, that shit will break instantly, if you didn't use any shielding gas there are so many impurities in that weld i'm amazed you were able to lay anything in there, get some argon and a new open diff, take it apart clean it and weld it, its not hard at all if you need any help PM me

I just stuffed mine with nuts and bolts and some rocks and then wrapped the carrier several times with duct tape. BE SURE TO REMOVE THE CARRIER AND RING GEAR SO YOU CAN GET THE DUCT TAPE ON PROPERLY!
Im really just kidding. You can get away with much smaller welds if you just do it properly. I would get a drain plug from a vlsd as well with a welded as it will catch junk on it. |

I would not drive it on the street. It is one thing if it lets go at a parking lot event, but if it explodes on the freeway that is different.
I have done a few...I plate them like the PBM. It gives it allot more to weld to. Also if you did not heat the gears to at least 500 degrees the gears will more than likely crack. |

You trashed that one...I wouldn't trust it.
A side note, you don't use 100% Argon for steel welding. I would recommend C25 or a C02 mix.

You asked for our opinion...nobody here is bagging just to be rude, we are trying to help you, and keep you from getting hurt or hurting someone else. How would your uncle feel if you or somone else got hurt while using the diff he welded? |

That looks horrid.
If one of those chunks falls out and gets stuck between your ring and pinion, it could lock your rear end up and either leave you stranded or stuck spinning out because your rear locks up.
