Bad Turbo seals or valve seals...?
Okay I have an s14 with an s14 notchback swap. And I don't know if it just started smoking or got it that way...when I got the car was all stock just the sr20 swap..but anyways, Motor is all stock but Rocker arm stoppers a fmic and a straight pipe. No cats or resonator. Well car smoke when I let it idle for 20+ second and I take off or rev it up. But just the first rev than it clears up. Won't smoke when driving or idling. Car still running the stock 7-8 pounds...any help? it's not that bad but I want to fix this asap. Lol
Could it be a bad turbo or valve seals.? Also I'm running mobil1 10-50 synth. If it even matters. I was running 5-30 and thought that was the problem but still doing it |

Do you know anyone with a spare turbo to test? If its a journal bearing turbo, it sounds like the seals are slowing going bad. But it also could be the valve seals like you said because I had the same issue on my old car, and I replaced the valve seals and no more smoke!

Usually smoking at idle is the turbo seals, my car would randomly smoke at idle for a good 20 seconds. I replaced my turbo and it hasn't happened since.

Yeah it won't smoke at idle dude. Just smoke when it sits and i take off. Than it clears. I can let the car sit at idle for 1hour and no smoke would come put until I take off.

Pretty sure its the turbo then. I thought bad valve seals smoked at idle and stoped a little ways after you get on the gas. Could be either or. Maybe even rings going bad. I would start by replacing turbo if you have access to a un-blown one, or as stated above, do a leak down test.

definitely sounds like valve seals if it smokes when you take off after letting it sit for awhile. You can change them yourself just make sure you don't drop a valve into your motor otherwise you will be doing a lot of extra work.

If it is the valve seals, why would you only do the seals? The valve guides probably need some replacing too.
But I'd check to make sure first that its not the turbo. Take the inlet off and check for shaft play. As long as you dont have much in and out play, it should be good. |

Mine never smoked at idle or even part throttle, cold or warmed up, but would only smoke when I get into boost.. Turned out my $2800 hks turbo was taking a shit on me and the oil seals were going out.. Gl op

I can step on it when I'm driving it and won't smoke at all dude ....I can let the car sit at idle fr hours from a cold start and won't smoke. It smokes when I rev it up after the car is sitting down For maybe 20+ seconds. But than it clears up... |
