motorex

hey guyz,

just got back form SEMA and theres a new thing with motorex. it turns out that they have been doing really shady work on their legalizations of their skyline. from what i hear is that they have been selling half cut skylines and welding them back together. and other non-specific stuff. so now if you try to call them they say that there is no machanics working there any more.also from what i hear KEN also left because of this stuff. so they are going out of business and the government is suppose to auction off their skylines. in order to get one you must send it back to japan and have someone legalize it there and them send it back. i asked how much and the quote i got was around 17k +car and shipping. so the good news is that there is going to cheaper skylines. so now other shops are trying to get the info to leagalize skylines like sharks curcling a kill, lol. i hope this makes it easier to get those awsome cars here.

if this is a repost sorry.

I never liked them anyway. 30k for a r32? Screw that, I'd just buy a r32 for 10-15, and register it as a honda.

umm...from what I know Ken is still at MotoRex. There are still mechanics that work there and they are not putting back together any cut up Skylines. I've been there many times and I've even been drinking with the owner...I don't think this is true, and have never seen anything of the sort.

As far as I know, Ken was leaving two weeks or so ago.

why would you ship it to japan to legalize it when rb-motoring is right here and could? I doubt this is true at all though.

They do. Someone else is going to have to become a registered importer. I seriously doubt it was as bad as welding together cut-in-half cars.

The stuff about MotoRex being shady is true. Not properly legalizing cars, flat out lying to their customers, taking 55 years to improperly legalize cars... this stuff isn't exactly a secret.

The welding halfcuts together sounds like BS to me...

But, yeah. This stuff is common knowledge over on FA in the Skyline forums.

Sean from RB plans to become a RI himself at some point, then MotoRex will finally be dead and gone.

And Sean will just become the next tyrant..

i'm not sure exactly what was mean with the half cut part, something about getting half cut R34 and getting shitty shells putting them together and selling them as new. i think thats what they meant? well i just wanted to see if anyone else heard anything and to see whats up with them. i called them the other day and they said that they couldn't do anything cause they didn't have any machanics and i also heard that their skylines are going up for action and thats where when you buy them then you have to send it back to japan, legalize them and them bring it back, just the ones fro motorex now. but post up any more info you guyz might know. i hope this means cheaper legalizations and no more monopolys on these great cars.

i'm glad motorex is going out of business just out of spite. they charged way too much for their cars(up to 90 grand for a stock r-34 on their website[used]). I hope other companies will form with more affordable prices so we can have more skylines running around the states. This will kill 2 birds with one stone. 1-more nissan enthusiasts will be able to buy them. 2-it will finally end people jocking the skyline as the greatest car ever built cause it will be more commonplace to see one fly by doing 180mph sideways shooting flames out the back.

Man when they first started selling cars I caused a big stink with Mark and there methods. I don't give a rats ass how much money they say they put into "Testing" I went around japan taking pictures of GT-R's I found a One owner V-spec 32 for $5000 that was 5 years ago. Now I can get a R32 V-spec for around $3000 it is re-dick-ulous how they screwed everyone over with the pricing. It cost very little to ship cars "roll on- Roll off" on a ship and it cost me $3000 to fill a 20ft container with engines and body kits and ship it to California. OK I will stop now just furious thinking about it.

Regardless of how cheap it is to actually get the cars in Japan and how cheap the shipping is, it does not change the fact that you have to get the car to comply with DOT and CARB/EPA to legally register it in California or anywhere in the U.S..
Motorex got caught with a whole load of cars that were bought and paid for but did not have the DOT door pillars installed that were required
(when MotoRex got official approval by the DOT to bring the cars in originally part of it was these door pillars to meet federal crash safety standards).
Sean from RB is probably the only person who could pull off bringing the cars in legally now and thats because he worked at MotoRex before he started RB motoring for a long time.
Basically anyone else that wants to bring the car in legally is A: going to have to comply with those standards and B possibly going to have to do new crash tests as well as possible new smog test station data.
Grey Market cars were big back in the late 80's until the goverment cracked down on the stuff.
Ask Bill Gates who had a $90,000 Porsche RSR sitting in a Federal warehouse at the port of Oakland California because they clamped down. Did not matter how rich he is the FED's said no and that was that. hence the car sits in limbo to this day.
Honestly guys, this pretty much spells the end of Legal U.S. R32 , R33. R34 Skylines.
DOT and EPA are not going to be to keen on people bringing them in regardless and if someone does pull it off don't be surprised to see MotoRex pricing.
Why? because they are gonna feel the hassle they went through justifies the pricing.
If anyone here follows the Skyline Forums you will see a lot of American Skyline owners scrambling to sell there cars out of fear of getting the car impounded.
MotoRex was not playing by the rules and doing shady things that is no doubt, but fact is do not think, or expect to it be easier now to get Skylines because you think it will be cheaper.
Its going to be harder period.
Also now the DOT , EPA and CARB all have more reasons to say no to the whole idea.
People don't realize once a importer/ shop gets caught breaking the rules the whole deal goes not just that importer or shop.
Same deal could happen with SR's . If a shop gets nailed hard for selling SR's that wind up in street cars and not for off road use only the whole SR scene will be toast except in the states that don't care about smog or engines, which is like 5 states out of the whole country.
They will crack down on this stuff right at the ports plain and simple.
Do not under estimate the FED's when it come to non legal importing they put people in Jail for it all the time.

i dunno about that, dangerous dave.. but i will say my friend wants to sell his R32 because its been nothing but unreliable. besides the fact that getting support out here for that particular car has been far from easy. there are not enough skilled mechanics to work on such a beast, and this definately includes our beloved motorEX....................................

these skylines will be vintage soon, how crazy is that

well as far as Ken leaving that is true. but its not because of the business (to what i was told). as far as the cars being cut in half that is not true as well. when the car arrives and clears customs. they are all picked up at the ports and driven back to Motorex. they had 3 mechanics there at one point which was Klay, Chris, and one more guy that i didnt know. Chris no longer works there and Klay opened up his own shop (K's Factory). for the 3rd guy, im not sure if hes still there. i dont think that Motorex will be going out of business because they are the direct importer/distributor of C-West and DRFT aero. i think they are just going to be a smaller business.

Blah blah blah carb testing....blah blah blah crash testing........blah blah blah I could care less I am glad they are out, after the first few R34's and R33's they realized no one was watching they got greedy and started cutting corners, just like most business that learn the loop holes and decide they want to rake in heavy cash. $5000 (average cost of R32)x 10 does not equal $90,000~ the cost they listed 1 R34. I am part of a car shop here and we hit dealer austions on a regular. A used R34 here will not cost you $90,000 try $15,000 for a base GT-R $20,000 V-spec and $23,000 for a NUR spec that is a whole lot of money left over $67,000 carb testing does not cost that much once the crash test results are gathered for a car they are stored. On average there are 10 cars needed for the various crash testing and well don't think they are going to crash test 10 Nur spec GT-R's. I would be surprised if they even crash tested GT-Rs at all considering the similarities of the 2.5l turbo version. any way why beat a dead horse everyone will always have an opinion about these things. I wish you could have GT-R's in the states leagally at the price I would pay for one here in japan or S15's for that matter. Whatever.

OT; (if anyone cares) but he did get it out of "limbo" I read it in some magazine article. Explained how he basically had the laws changed through the courts to get the car out of there. Also interviewed the one and only shop able to import and legalize them. So yes you can now get a 959 in the states, for a crazy price. Goes to show that with enough money you can change the laws.

Thrill Capsule- I read that article too, amazing shop that does that! 959s all around, sooo cool. I hope Motorex is done, I hope Sean takes over, he has shown (or, atleast reported, how do I know for sure) that he's dedicated to US Skyline owners. He follows all the legally imported cars, most of the illegal one's too. He took a trip to Alaska to help a guy work on his R32! Sean's always on the FA boards, alright, I'm done kissing his ass now. :ghey:

Skylines weren't meant to be driven in the U.S. anyways. Let's bring it all back to Japan and keep it that way. We'll have less bullshit to talk about in forums.

If I had $ leaking out of my ass like a river:

-- Have MrMeph buy an R32 in Japan (US$6000).
-- Remove engine/transmission. (US$1000)
-- Ship to USA as PARTS. (< US$3000)
-- Slush fund. (US$2000)
-- Re-assemble. (DIY)
-- For the ultimate stealth setup, install the US S13 front-end and LHD conversion. (US$3000?)
-- Swap VIN tags (this is *highly* illegal -- but who gives a shit on some crappy old Nissan!) and register as a 1989-1994 Nissan 240sx.
-- Don't run your mouth on the interweb about it.
-- Put some $ aside for legal fees. (US$5000)

I seriously think the Skyline legalization business will completely fall apart (if there ever really was one) when the 2007 GT-R arrives stateside. I'm sure Motorex, et al. have already felt the hurt from the STI and the Evo. Maybe they just saw the writing on the wall...

Yeah, grey market was big in the 80's, but the gov't has definitely cracked down since then. I still get shit sometimes about my grey-market R5 Turbo, but I have all EPA/DOT releases stating that it meets US requirements, so I can prove to it is legal.

I knew a guy who bought an R5 Turbo that was what one of you guys mentioned doing, registered as a different car than it really was(an american spec Renault) When he brought it to his home state and tried to register it they saw it was using a fraudulent VIN # and they confiscated the car from him, he had to take it out of the country or cut it up, this was after it had already been used in the US for 10 years without anyone ever noticing.

If you want something that is not going to get you into that kind of trouble, you will need to spend money for it. I definitely think it was worth the extra cost on my R5 to get real EPA/DOT releases etc. Basically its better to spend a little bit of extra initial money than to have to lose your total investment later.
