Post Nissan cutting production in Mexico to compensate for low U.S. demand

Filed under: Car Buying, Economy, Plants/Manufacturing, Hatchbacks, Nissan
It's been easy to forget about Nissan's small car offerings with the recent introduction of the redesigned Maxima in New York and the impending arrival of the GT-R for the first time on U.S. shores. But some of Nissan's more compact vehicles remain the bread and butter of the brand and fill the transportation needs of the masses. However, they're far from exciting and recent sales in the U.S. bear this out. To cope with these slow movers, Nissan is planning to idle its Aguascalientes, Mexico plant for a seven days this month so it can realign production with demand. According to Automotive News, the slowdown of car sales in America is expected to cause a bit of a slump for Mexico's burgeoning automotive industry, as many of the export models built there are intended for sale in the States. After the seven day closure, things should be back to normal, and hopefully sales of Nissan's small cars will rise along with fuel prices.

I'm not surprised, have you seen the new Sentra? And they should have just replaced the Altima with a completely new design, the current design is already played out. That little facelift they tried to give it aint working...

The Altima is still Nissan's best selling car. You may not think it was enough but sales say otherwise.

The Sentra though.

I think the Altima looks nice, the coupe anyway. I still wouldn't buy it though.

The sentra reminds me of what happens when a brother and a sister make a baby. I'm not a big fan of sedans, but the newest altima with the 3rd times the charm redesigned tail lights doesnt look half bad.

but its the quality that you really buy from nissan. i am looking for a daily now, and am actually leaning towrds a versa or sentra. not flashy, not fast, but damned if they won't last 200,000+ miles. lets be real about. the z can be a good track car. the g35 coupe aswell. the rest are just family haulers. period!

hopefully there will be a sale soon on versas!

What a terrible financial time for nissan to go out on a limb and offer the gtr.

It is unfortunate because a few years ago when nissan came up with this idea, it would have been profitable.

Now.

Demand = high, but money is not there for customers to buy.

Then.

Demand= high, money was there, but no cars available.

The people that have enough money to buy a GTR are gonna have enough money to buy a GTR recession or not.

Pretty much All the GTR's will be sold. There is enough hype around the car and Nissan was smart about enough about low production numbers to sell every last one. They won't lose a cent on it and it will increase Z sales. I have to chime in at first I did not like the Versa but I have seen a few lately that with the right paint color scheme look good. The Altima coupe is a winner as well except they should have named it something other than Altima.
