head unit stuff
1. on the larger radio connecter, there is two, there is a black wire that was cut. I wanna assume its ground, as black usually means ground, but idk. Can anyone help? its in the lower right slot (IDFK how to read that damn wiring scheme in the FSM)
also. I was wondering, would it be worth it to piece together a connection assembly so i can just plug the oem wiring to the head unit, all in one, and next time i wanna switch head units i can just cut the head unit wires rather than shorten my oem one? Or not worth it? like [ oem wiring w/ 2 plugs] -------- [ plug for oem side { { plug for aftermarket side] ------- head unit rather than -----------[plug 1 of oem] --------/------- headunit -----------[plug 2 of oem] --------/------- headunit the / is where oem wiring is cut and spliced with aftermarket wiring

You can buy a wire harness. It will plug into the factory wire harness and give you color coded wires that will match up with the colors on your headunit. You can get them at any stereo store or like a best buy type of retailer. That way when you sell the car you just unplug the harness you bought and the factory harness will go right into the factoy stereo again.

S13 - Metra part number 71-1763
S14 - Metra part number 71-7550 These are the harnesses into the car that will plug into an OE radio. Note they are color coded to the standard of aftermarket radios, so the colors don't match but there's hundreds of schematics and diagrams online. There is NO ground in the OE radio harness, the radio grounds through the case when it's screwed into the dash. A thick, black wire anywhere in that area is not an OEM lead. Most car audio installers do run a lead though and bolt it somewhere, either the dash support or to the transmission trim ring.

And are you sure? In my OE harness, with the plug that had pigtails that USED TO connect to the factory radio, a black ground is pinned in the connector. With the alpine unit, previous owner cut it and used it to extend it to the trans trim ring. My main question is though, would it be worth it to make a pinned connection so when i wanna swap out headunits (its old as shit and prolly going to die soon) i don't have to dick around with unsoldering wires, instead i can just pin a new connector and plug it up. Or should i just solder it all?
