A/c constantly on/off/on/off

A/C constantly turns off, then on, then off, while driving. At first it seem like it was at high RPMs when it switched off, now it's totally random. The light is on then fades to a dim, then gone, then back (if I'm lucky). I live in Texas so this is a huge problem for me, especially since summers here. What I also notice is it does this ONLY when its extremely hot outside during the afternoon and early evening, never in the mornings nor the late evenings when its still a little cool. I recharged last month. Never had the problem before the recharge. After about 30 minutes to an hour it catches itself on and I get cold air. ¬.¬ By that time I'm at my destination.

Usually it does that when you're low on freon. But if you've recently coverted from R12 to R134a, you could be experiece some of the freon leaking. Or, sometimes when the ambient air is too hot, there's not much your A/C can do, so it cycles(turns on/off), so that it doesn't put too much of a load on your engine causing it to overheat. Lastly, with high RPMs or Wide Open Throttle(WOT), your A/C will shut off to optimize engine power/acceleration.

Defective ambient air temp sensor or triple pressure switch more than likely. Refer to the FSM to diagnose each one.

my moneys on leak,

there had to be a reason that u needed a recharge in the first place...like a leak...unless of course initial recharge was misdiagnosed and other problem never got fixed, then u got charged a butt load of cash for 0.10 lb of freon><

Freon is consumable it doesn't last forever, especially if it's in a 10-15 year old car.

Well before I recharged it was extremely mild, a little or no cold air at all. I can't help but to believe I did something right being that its cold now, very cold (when it decides to work). But apparently I also did something wrong. But the cold air lasted for about a month now and still going (when it decides to work). Freon runs out over time (thats the reason why I recharged), so I don't think its a leak. Whew, but willing to spend $8 at Wal-mart for some Freon is fine with me. If 8 bucks can fight Texas' summer heat, than 8 bucks it is.

somewhat true, but matter cannot be created or destroyed, hence a leak will make it not last forever. u dont burn freon, u compress it and expand it to use it as a heat transfer media. u dont consume it if it was consumable id have to fill r502 on my 25 year old cold storage units ever year? when theres a leak it leaks, hence u need to recharge, small leaks are acceptable, yes, but not big ones.

however, because he just stated that it works very cold very intermittantly, its probrably pressure switch related.

edit: AGAIN, freon does not go bad, it leaks out, buy a gauge....
