Riots are more common in Canada than people think. There were recent ones in Montreal and Toronto too.

Dammit, what DO I know?
American sports fans do not riot because their sports are too slow-paced and boring to inspire such a rush.

I was cheering for Boston. Mainly because of Zdeno Chara.

Hockey and 'soccer' are on the same level in my book.
They are the only two team sports I can stand watching.

I watched a Whitecaps game once, bored out of my mind - World Cup was much better, if only for the crowd. Regular season games though

I find basketball much more entertaining to watch, so much a c t i o n, depending on who's playing. I live in the wrong country lol

What a disgrace, I would be totally embarrassed if I lived there, forever shamed in my eyes and I feel in many others as well. If I was there I would have beaten so many idiots down who tried to do shit.

I think it's a combination of the hype and the massive crowds downtown. Vancouver calls itself a "hockey city" and their long playoff run made everyone a fan. People start congregating downtown to watch the game and then the city decides to start closing streets to accommodate the growing crowd.

Police reported few problems because the Canucks were winning. Liquor stores closed early, but the lines beforehand were insane. And of course the bars were packed.

Were 100,000 people in downtown Chicago during the Finals? Mob mentality plays a big role. If you're in a crowd you think you can get away with anything.

Oh and...

i've always found it interesting why hockey has never caught on more in the us. its basically everything americans love. big hits, fast paced, high skill, fights. like football but faster paced. and at least hockey players aren't pansies like basketball or baseball players.

my guess is hockey would take off in the us it people could actually afford to put their kids in organized teams. hockey is probably the most expensive organized sport to enroll a child in.

I don't personally enjoy watching Hockey but I think you hit the nail on the head regarding the cost to participate.

Any other sport is more accessible at any time of day. If you want to go into your backyard and play catch, go down the street and shoot some hoops, or practice football, then you can. It's not so easy with Hockey.

My parents enrolled me in hockey lessons till I was 12 years old. I stopped going and stopped taking it seriously because they couldn't afford to purchase me the expensive chest guard.

How many of us have ice hockey rinks in our backyard?

It probably is a matter of having more facilities to support the sport.
Can't imagine it would be that expensive to say football or baseball.

Maybe it is more popular in colder climates, where ppl have more access to winter sports based lifestyle.
Obviously you're not going to find the sport as accessible if you haven't done any ice skating prior.
Anyone can pick up a basketball & shoot hoops.

It is a pretty fun game to watch, and I don't mind if it's already on.

I used to play hockey and the equipment is very expensive and there is a good bit more of it then football. in highschool football and even popwarner the equipment is supplied if they couldn't do that for hockey then most people couldn't afford outfitting a growing kids.

Yeah...
In pop warner, they supplied our stuff, same for middle and high school - all except for shoes and gloves.
Same for baseball the one year I played.
Hell, to play basketball, all you need is a pair of sneakers, so even if you opt for the high dollar ones, it's no huge deal. We have a couple of ice rinks here in my town now, and the Carolina Hurricanes stopped and played here on the way between Hartford and Raleigh, but dead in the middle of ACC country, basketball is king where I live.
