s13/s14 ??
If it is a S14, drop the back seat, get about 2 feet of extensions and a 12mm socket and take the latch off the trunk lid. You'll then be able to get in and disconnect the wires to the latch and open it up to diagnose.. My bet is that the lever that you can push down to disable the trunk release in the cabin got pushed down. If not you have a similar problem that i have dealt with for quite some time and the latch/striker are disagreeing and you're gonna have a bitch of a time making it work again.

I've got a similar problem with my S14, Trunk unlocks, and the Trunk Release on the Gas Door lever works, but if I lock the car, go shopping, and come back and try to open just the trunk, it will not turn. It sucks

what model is it? s13 or s14? your latch is in need of some grease the next time you get it open. take it off and lube it up and you shouldnt have this problem anymore

S14, the latch is secured with M6 bolts, 10mm head, not 12mm.
There's a cancel switch on the latch that prevents the pull handle from opening, it's a valet feature. Make sure the switch is flipped up. You can also adjust the tension on the latch to ensure the lid pops up when released and doesn't sit on the latch, allowing it to lock when the cable is released.
