A few weeks back, i bought an apex n1 exhaust. I wish i could  tell everybody how great it is but i have not got a chance to install it yet. The reason is because the guy who had the car before me had a hi-flow cat WELDED on to the header on one side and the exhaust on the other. Since i did not feel like messing up my new exhaust, i decided to cut off the cat at the header.  Now the exhaust comes up short.  What are my options and prices for cats or anything else like a straight pipe or something. I dont want to spend over 150 but i will if i have to. By the way, i have an 89' with a ka24e motor if that matters. Thanks for all help given.

If I'm not mistaken, PDM-Racing.com sells a dump pipe for the KA which replaces the cat completely, so that should get yo to where you need to be.

sounds like u cut the pipes from the header to the cat.... even if u get a cat, wouldnt it be too short still?
i would advise  u to buy a header, get a junkyard cat (or buy a brand new highflow cat) and bolt on your exhuast

I cut the weld, not the header. The mounts for the cat are still there and the header is fully intact. I just need to get something to go between the header and the exhaust. Also, i heard that you cant by a cat from a junkyard. Is that true?

yes it is true.......
u might run into problems if the cat is no good.... so becareful...
u might not pass emmissons if the cat is no good but your car will drive fine... if u get a dump pipe u wont pass emmissions....

shops cant sell used cats...illegal. Magnaflow sells sweet stainless steel universal hi-flow weld-in cats. U need to know approx size that will fit.

i would try to buy one from a junkyard.... they do anything for money........ but u can always just steal it if they dont sell it to u....

I personally would never risk stealing/buying a cat which may or may not be broken. The way I look at it: when something is broken, it should probably get fixed and upgraded. So, spend a couple more bucks, get a high-flow cat and see if you can get a header for a good price too. Just my two pennies...

This is slightly off topic, but didn't want to start a new thread....I'm a couple weeks away from installing my Apexi N1 single on my S14 and was wondering what type of exhaust note I should expect when leaving on the stock catalytic converter...is it gonna be noticeable....I'm wondering if it's going to be too quiet:(...I hope not. Would you reccomend getting a high flow cat like from Random Tech???

speaking of high-flo cat's... do they reduce low end power like a huge exhaust will?

I know of the Random Technologies high-flow cat that SCC installed on their project 240, there was no noticeable loss in power.....

Well i feel stupid for doing this but i sent my car to the shop to just have the old cat welded on to the new exhaust. They piping on the exhaust is like 2 1/2 or 3 in. Im not sure, but the cat pipes are at least a 1/4in thinner. I hope that it doesn't affect the performance that the exhaust was supposed to bring. Oh, and while its at the shop, my new suspension parts will be put on. Tokico shocks and eibach springs. Total price for ALL labor is 300. I dont think thats too bad. Anyways, thanks for all suggestions given. Ill take some pictures and put them up when the work is finished.

Once you get the header and the rest of the piping matched up you'll hear a deeper, throatier sound. I don't know if you think the loss in power is that significant (maybe 2-5 horses without 2 1/2 in. piping and a high-flow cat). This is just off the top of my head. I tried racing my boyfriend who has an S14 with intake, exhaust, a header, high-flow cat, and an aluminum flywheel/clutch upgrade (that's what he had at the time we raced) and he kind of won. He pulled half a car length in front of me before I even reached second gear. I probably don't drive my car the way he does since I've only got some 3 months experience driving stick. I don't know...
