Fuglychuki’s undercooked type x
Hi, my names Jalen and I don’t really care for making build threads but I enjoy reading others. Being that the season here in Michigan is over and the offseason is now I have time to address things I couldn’t while driving the car.
I guess I’ll start from the beginning. I traded a 02 5 speed forester I had for a week if that and some cash(more then I should of) for said 91 s13 hatch. The car was honestly pretty ratty and needed love. I didn’t know really what I was doing but nobody really does at first. Either way, this was not long after I bought it I had spent time learning(attempting to) how to weld and repair some of the rust. The car had typical frame rail issues, rockers, and some very minor strut tower rust. I got the car half decent and paid a dude to paint it. It was sprayed ah3 single stage. It wasn’t the best but it was what I could afford at the time. Here are some befores and after I guess haha [IMG][/IMG] Posted up with my twin brother and his Integra probably about a month after paint and me 5lug swapping the car, PBM comp coils and square g33s. Then, I stored the car for the winter and bought a couple different shit box dailies. First was a 91 Volvo 240 wagon(auto), now I currently own a 5 speed 89 wagon and a 01 330ci. The car was stored at my girlfriends' moms house for a few months and I would drive from Lansing to Port Huron every other weekend to visit her and work on the car. At this point, I had had a couple of different sets of wheels, MB battles, xt7s, blitz 03s.. I then decided to go pretty hard(in my opinion) pulled the rear subframe, replaced some fuel lines dropped the gas tank and undercoated above it, burned out the subframe bushings, painted it etc,etc you guys know. Swapped to 5” 12k/10k springs on the pbms, welded the diff, got a one-piece steel driveshaft. How the car looked after I pulled it out of the garage after everything. I have oem skirts, wing, bumper. The valances are dorki dori. Put the wing on, changed wheels up. Went all 17’s. At this point, the car had extended front lcas, gktech outers+inners, and their roll center correction kit. Nothing was fitted right either due to me knowing it was gonna come back off for paint. I’ll update some more momentarily |

Thanks man! I do have more Aswell haha. I’m mad because I was writing for so long that the session timed out and I didn’t save anything so I have to start all over but it’s okay because I’ve been at work trying to do it and it wasn’t written very good

Well, my real reason for getting the Swift’s is due to them allegedly being more linear. Before, the pbm comps came with 10k/8k and they allow you to run +/- 2k without needing the dampers re-valved. You may be right though as I’ve never done any real events in the thing yet. so, I can’t say if I’ll like how it truly handles as I have nothing to really compare it too

Some backstory
So, I’m here now haha big thanks to Damon for helping me get a build thread going. I’m going to apologize ahead of time for my lack of going into detail(not sure if you guys really would even like that) so I’m going to go back in time some and try and bring this/myself up to speed haha.
So, basically let’s go to the actual beginning(don’t worry, I’m not gonna use the same pics.) 1991 s13 hatch. When I got it the hatch was a different color, no carpet, holes in the floor, crusty torn up grey leather seats, but it was so cool to finally own a car I had been wanting since I was 15 I think. The car had rust, but I was determined to fix it myself and make the car less of a pile a shit. This build unfortunately won’t be one of those really concise, everything is perfect builds primarily because this car is far, far, far from perfect. BUT, I’ll do my best though. Got the car, “fixed” the frame rails and the rockers as best as I knew how. It wasn’t done perfectly and it was also the reason I bought a welder. I had never welded anything before prior to owning this car. Grabbed a pignose from a local friend because I prefer them over shark nose. I also found a Pignose Lip I drove 4 hours to get for $40 Frame rails were trash and for whatever reason I don’t know where the finished photos of it are(not like they are good but they are better then the angle iron the po tacked onto the rot that was there) and yes I used flux cause I ran out of gas. I did just cut everything out of I wanna say 16 gauge, again not perfect. I did this all outside of my moms apartment I lived with at the time on the ground in a parking spot. Yes I undercoated over the rails and all that jazz but don’t have pics. Next I fixed the rockers by cutting them out and got recommended a guy in the UK I want to say, who remakes sills/rockers. Bought those and chopped mines out not having a clue what I was doing. I ended up redoing the right side later down the line a lot better. At that point the car was still stock suspension with the exception of kouki tails, 5 lug swap I did and z32 wheels. Picked up these boiz But before I put them on, I paid a dude $1500 for a single stage spray(ah3)with Prep and all that(looking back I would of avoided but didn’t have the knowledge or space at the time) this is a picture he sent me afterwards. I was hyped to say the least. Picked up some square g33s 17x9+15 I wanna day and got some 215/45s. <a href="https://postimages.org/" target="_blank"><img src="https://i.postimg.cc/Yq4FFntx/C666-B994-4-BC8-4201-9-B74-78-EDFBB5-C48-D.jpg" alt="C666-B994-4-BC8-4201-9-B74-78-EDFBB5-C48-D"/></a> And lowered the car/aligned it(I’m a alignment tech) and enjoyed it for the rest of the summer pretty much. My rad was leaking so I swapped that out and did a h4 swap with some silver stars,and changed the belts. I knew winter was coming and I didn’t want to reverse all the work I had done..bought a $700 Volvo 245 wagon and needless to say you know how that story went. Drove my car for about a month in the winter with them salting roads(internally crying) Volvo #1 About a month later, still wanted a Volvo so I picked up this manual 245. Too say the least this car is a fucking blast. It’s slow but it never stops running and it’s a tank in the snow. Pretty sure the car has close to or over 300k as the odo stopped at 260k haha. My girlfriend lived two hours from me in the city I used to live in and her mom let me store my car for the winter there. So it sat for a while while I was sorting and dealing with the issues that come with buying used old cars. |

sorry for the double post, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t gonna have to re-type all this a third time on my phone.
SO, yeah the car sat. The more and more I looked At it it just was kinda boring looking. Simple is best imo but I was really starting to want to do something else. So I decided to go type x as you saw in my first post. Bought 18s. Chrome battles and xt7s a buddy powder coated for me. Decided 18s, were a little too big for me up front so I went the 17/18 route. Idk if it was the xt7s, but being they were 18x9.5+12 I had to run a lot of negative camber in the rear to fit them with 225/35s. That’s when I picked up the xc8’s in 17x9+17. Picked up a key!s 330mm from evasive and wasn’t a fan of it in my s13. I think it was how deep it felt compared to my nardi that I had in it. At that point I pulled the rear subframe and dropped the gas tank. Only one of my rear calipers locked up so I replaced them both and did the rear brakes along with the pbm subframe risers, eccentric lockouts, all new es poly bushings for the lca’s, rear uprights, isr pro arms, welded diff and Swift’s on my pbms. Then, I had to address the front suspension. Gktech extended flcas,inners,outers and their roll center correction kit which I’ll touch on why I got rid of them later. Also, got a little cup holder from STI and it came with this cool little postcard of streeter’s coupe I wanna say. Atleast it says streeter on it. I also did a tune up, deleted egr, installed isr headers and testpipe I got in a trade for my g33’s. Got a bride rep and some street faction rails which I don’t have any pics of installed.Also, put in some es rack bushings and isr rack lines. After I got all that wrapped up decided to start searching for some oem kouki aero. Managed to get ahold of two sets of skirts, dorki valances, new oem bumper/extensions lights, oem wing, and dorki poly lip(not the grey one, I had two lips) aero marker mirrors. Sold my xt7s(I hate myself still) and picked up some more 17s. Some model 5s as you saw. Decide to go 17 all the way around I finally got the car back together and on the ground( I was driving 4 hours round trip every other weekend to go work in a unheated/not insulated garage) And spring was around the corner. My girls mom was moving out of the house so I had to move the car all the way back to Lansing. I eyeballed the alignment and drove it all the way home. At that point, I didn’t have anywhere to keep my car being that I live in an apartment. Me an my brother decided to go halfsies on a small storage space. 16x38’ with shitty lights, no heat and 110 sockets for electrical. But more ideal then being outside fixing things. So, I raised(ugh) the front of the car and aligned it. Hanging with a buddy My super trash interior before I bought another nardi My car was insured but no plate. I had a bunch of fun doing a little streeting and eventually tire caught the fender after I lowered it because I didn’t like how it sat haha. This is the reason I got rid of the rcc kit. It pushes your wheels out 25mm so it works better for wheels that aren’t as low of offset and if you don’t have your car very low. Bought some decently clean fenders for $100 from a guy in kzoo. Swapped the fender out and the apartment management told me to move my car or it would be towed due to no plate. Put a expired plate on(I know, I don’t think they cared because there’s multiple cars with expired plates in my complex) and they put another sticker on it. I got mad and moved the car to the shop and it was an absolute pain getting the car in the shop do to how low it is. A pic before I drove it there. After fighting with the car, I knew that it was going to stay in there until I painted which was quite the endeavor. I decided to learn how to do it, I asked people on the internet a bunch of questions, red a lot of things but ultimately, I had no one that could stop me from making mistakes. So I prepped, sanded, sanded, sanded, sanded, you guys get it. Deleted the third brake light and shaved the antenna. Bought some origin cf canards(for sale) Took everything back apart to prime the car fully with polyester filler to get everything somewhat straight and then block it, shoot urethane primer and wetsand it. Cut the passenger side rocker out about a foot section to make it better then what I did in the past. Prepped the kit and all that jazz in a day or two. I also bought this air compressor being it was the biggest that I could safely run in my “shop”. Two things I failed to mention is that I felt I needed a third car for due to issues with my girlfriends car I had to constantly fix(03 protege ughh) And I picked up a 01 330ci. It’s not the nicest but I didn’t care and it came with some cool stuff. It did cause me to get sidetracked for awhile here’s it before and after I owned it for a few months. The second thing I failed to mention was that I was aiming to have the car painted before super d Midwest trial at usair. I wasn’t driving I just wanted to give myself a deadline because I went on vacation the week before so I was trying to get the car hammered out. It didn’t happen so here’s a photo dump from when a bunch of friends and myself went out to the dairy state! Too many pics in one post sorry I’ll post more in a second |

Dang, nice job on the paint and fixing that rust. I also have been looking up prepping and painting myself to try to give it a try one of the days.
Can't wait to see the car with the bumper and skirts on.

Thanks man! It’s not bad even though it can take forever. I see why people charge so much to do it right. Soon the rest of the kit will be going on but I’m debating on leaving the bumper off for now only because I’m going to pull the motor soon. I’m not sure yet

Messed around with the car a little today. Primarily the ebrake. I had a spare lever that had the cover that I was missing so I swapped that on. Ever since I bought the car the button to realease the ebrake stays in which I’m assuming it’s the cheaper way to basically make it solely for drifting. I’d rather have a button in it to allow it to function like it’s suppose to and to change it when I wanna use it for slidey things. I also installed my oem boot and the shift knob.
Then I test fitted my brw03’s and some 18” model 5s from my daily |

Thanks man! Yeah my buddy keeps getting on me about it. I was either gonna get 180sx rainguards to kinda hide the pillars and I’ll probably end up wrapping the door trim. I was being lazy when I painted it ha

This is awesome man! Love the progress. It's so weird seeing pictures of the apartment complex where I had my S13 when I first got it. Too funny! We will have to meet up sometime next summer.

Sorry it’s been a little bit haha been busy with you know, snow. Anyhow, I have progressed with the car.
I’ve been tossing around the idea of rebuilding the motor. The car ran great minus the fact the 3” straight pipe sounds like trash na and I have 0 backpressure. The reason being, the cars odo reads like 262k or something of the like and I just would feel more comfortable KNOWING the mileage and that everything’s done myself aside from machine work. So, plans are to keep the motor na and not overcomplicate something that doesn’t need to be complicated. Probably gonna grab a tomei headgasket, possibly hot cam swap, arp studs,basically use stock rods and possibly get forged pistons for the future. I want pistons that are forged that will be around if not the same compression that the car is from factory that way it’s not sluggish due to low compression pistons in na configuration. I know the rods can handle some abuse but we will see when I open the block. Initially I was going to pull the head and just rebuild it and do new valve seals, cam swap and arps. Still up in the air. Yes I know I should have compression tested the car before I pulled things apart and I did in the past and it seemed fine from what I can remember. Anyone who’s been in my shoes chime in and give me some direction haha So here’s some pics of what I’ve been doing Pulled all the coolant related things off and the engine harness and trans harness are now seperated from the chassis. All that needs to be done as far as I know is the hydraulics for the clutch Mounts, shifter and she SHOULD be ready to come out. I placed a order with enjuku for them sick Black Friday deals. Picked up: Comp full face white bunny clutch kit Pivot ball Exedy master Gktech braided clutch line(ordered a rhd by mistake) Isr drift button Oem rear main seal Oem pilot bushing ARP flywheel bolts New exedy slave(from rock auto) Also picked up some goodies from shirtstuckedin. Picking up a hoist hopefully tonight from a buddy after me and my girlfriend go look at this car. On a bittersweet side note, I no longer on my e46. I really want to get seat time this year and while I’m doing my refresh on my car I don’t want to rush. So I traded a good friend of mines for his allegedly rust free s13 hatch. I plan on using this as a basic seat time car to improve my driving Basic run down of the car: 1989 Welded diff Short throw Some soft ass coilovers Crackless dash E fans Single slammer S14 seats White bunny unsprung clutch 14x7+12(what I’m told) long champs. Aftermarket radio This car is going to be VERY BUDGET like expenses will be spared haha just want something I’m not afraid to abuse right off the bat. Something I can get my feet wet with. I’ve already put my keys 330mm wheel in it and my tomei shift knob. Here’s a final goodbye from the e46(I let the 18s go kept the bronze 17s) Lastly, some more plans for the car. I plan to stitch weld the bay, fix the rust near where the brake line bracket is in the wheel well. Paint the bay and re-loom the engine harness, relocated the battery, basically clean the bay up. Then,I will dissassemble the motor and have it’s components measured and looked over at the machine shop since I don’t have good mics and suck at measuring things like a machinist can. So, some things happened and I did some things...basically pulled the motor and the trans in a day and today I had time to seperate the trans and remove mostly all the accessories. This is my first time doing any of this on a s13 so bare with me as I try and figure out these things. Just wanna do it right and not have a shit ton of issues. I also fixed the exhaust on my daily and welded some stuff. I’ve been doing a lot of maintenance to keep her running and for 300k she’s a tank. Hopefully she’ll go all winter without any major hiccups
Tossed the trans in my car and ran it to the car wash to just try and get as much loose dirt and road grime as I could off before I actually scrub it. Only reason I didn’t was because I forgot my brush haha End result:COULD BE BETTER Haha |

So, been busy chipping away at this thing. Got some cool things in the mail aswell. I’ve also decided to keep the rebuild stock. I’ve been talking to the machinist and just expressed to him I’m trying to keep things simple. I explained that I just wanted to have the crank checked, have the block decked if it needs it, cylinders Honed and possibly bored over if they are out of spec or egg shaped.
I have a couple mic’s and dial bore guages but they are cheap and not great quality so I’m unsure of how much I trust them. Eitherway I’m going to be re-using stock rods and grabbing new npr pistons. The motor will be stock with the exception of arp headstuds. Here’s the box of goods I got from enjuku Also,I was recommended by someone on here to swap the throwout bearing for a Koyo to reduce the likelihood of having a noisy throwout. I spent two cold nights after work in my Unheated “shop” tearing the motor down to a bare block in preparation to drop everything off at the machine shop. Also, painted the trans though no one will see it haha. I need to either get another trans harness or repair the one I have now because it just looks janky as shit and there’s a couple sensors that the wiring broke away from even before I pulled the drivetrain. Head was hot tanked, resurfaced, pressure tested and vacuum tested to make sure the valves were sealing. I’m not going to go any further doing a valve job or replacing guides. I’m just going to pull it apart and clean up the valves and put some new valve seals on. But I picked up the head today from the machine shop I also received my zeta 1(shout out to JIMBO) and got my oem ka gasket set from some dealership haha So, some of my next moves are going to be rebuilding the oil pump on my old cover and getting a oem timing chain kit unless anyone has any recommendations that are on par with oem for less haha. I need to change the studs on head for the exhaust mani because I have all new studs and I have to extract a broken stud. Once that’s done, I’m going start reassembly of the motor. Then I’m gonna get crackin’ on the bay bois!! Lol then I’ll move the rack forward to avoid the issues associated with schassis and more angle then stock. Then at some point I’ll really start addressing the interior haha. Until next time zilvians |

Saw what happened to your fender from the wheels. To stop that from happening again if you decide to go lower and experiment with wheel sizes, you can take a metal rod from any hardware store. A thin long one and weld it to the inside of your front fender. Stitch weld would be fine. Then roll them up front as normal. Will stop your front fender from crunching up from the front tire

Progress is being made although slowly due to life haha and owning two s13’s. Which brings me to the point that I will periodically update this thread with stuff about the other car aswell but the point of this thread is mainly focused on the red hatch.
So, I left off with my block and crank being dropped off at the machine shop. It’s been around two weeks now and I haven’t heard anything back so I’m still patiently waiting on that. The head is pretty much done officially. All I did to it was change the valve seals and exhaust studs to er spec and have the head milled. I stripped my old spare valve cover and shaved the letters and painted it wrinkle black. I think it came out pretty rad even though it’s basic haha I took something’s to work and cleaned them up. Mainly the lower timing cover, rear main housing and the pick up tube. I then replaced the front crank seal and rear main seal with oem seals. Cleaned everything up and gave some of the stuff a shot of that aluminum spray paint just to kind of make things look cleaner I’m super glad I cleaned out the pick up tube with compressed air and some brake cleaner lol there was a huge chunk of silicone that got sucked into it at some point in it’s life. The one that was broken i had to weld a nut on to get it out lol you can see from the discoloration New seals in and painted Old valve seals out and new ones in and head back together! Also went ahead and replaced the distributor o-ring and give it a clean and quick spray So what’s left on the red car as far as the engine goes is -assemble bottom end -install new timing components -simplify the intake -clean up engine harness -rebuild oil pump(parts are ordered) Then the engine bay will get attention. Generally, I’m not a mis-match bay kind of guy, atleast I’m not now haha, but what do you guys think I should spray it? Torn in between a metallic silver or torch red like the rest of the car and because I already have the paint. But I don’t mind getting something else because I’d rather do it once and be satisfied... Update on the other car So, long champs are hopefully going at the end of this week because 14s are a bit too small for my taste so I picked up some pretty weak but cool wheels. They are 4 lug avs vs-6 16x7+30. I’m going to have 25mm spacers behind them so they aren’t so sunk lol going to run 195/45s on them and maybe go up to a 50. They were just a little cheaper in that size so I scooped them. The car as it sits now Also picked up some suspension goods and some mirrors for the car. I came across a set of some used spl tension rods that I got for a decent price. Placed a order for all rear adjustable gktech arms and I’m probably going to get their subframe risers aswell just to follow the theme. Like I said, the goal of this car is to keep it simple and reliable. The most I’m probably going to do this car angle wise this year is the gktech roll center correction adapters( I know I should of held on to them) and slip on rack spacers. Trying to avoid the issues that a bunch of angle tends to give s13s. Also, picked up a nismo gt knob, bride head pad for my zeta, and a 330mm nardi. Going to transfer some lenses onto my ganador tails and run them on here. Probably going to be doing mostly type x aero on This car aswell. I also picked up these mirrors for pretty cheap. They are Honda hurricane mirrors but not the rr version you see on streeter’s and Itai’s cars. These are the f model but imo still cool looking. STAY GLEAMING |
