Damn. I'll be at ~200whp this season. Note to self: don't buy 595s!

Yeah I'll be buying DZ101 probably for front and rear.

Can't wait to try these out.

im at 360 hp
running 245s and 255s ss595
3 laps. max on those tires. no more
thats why ive been using dz101, maxxis and re01rs lately!
last WAY longer and grip soo much better in same tire sizes.
more expensive yse..but also i get about 10x the life out of them compared w/ 595

I would agree, mostly...except that for extended track use (grip)...the RT615's get greasy. So do the Direzza Star Specs, but not as bad. MX's can take all the heat you throw at them.

BUT...Star Specs ARE faster...by a good bit.

For GRIP, using AFFORDABLE street tires:

1) Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec
2) Azeni RT615
3) Kumho MX

In general...but I like MX's better for the hot Florida weather, and shorter, technical road courses.

On my KA-T I recently decided to try a set of Federal RS-R 255/40/17 on the rear. All I can say is WOWZERS! Haven't tested them at 25lbs (530whp) but at 19lbs (460) they only break loose in 1st. I'm thinking I'll be able to cut 1.7 60ft's. Not bad at all considering I paid $130 a tire.

300+ hp

18x9 all around
225/40/18

Toyo Proxes suck. They wear out fast, don't grip (wet nor dry), and hydroplane. My steering wheel would shake constantly (two different sets, two different shops, both were balanced multiple times.)

General Exclaim UHP are great DD tires that are cheap. They don't wear out fast (even with a bit of negative camber), they grip in the wet and dry, and they don't hydroplane. I'm not a drifter, so I can't review them in that area. They have the best performance to price ratio IMO.

we ran ss595 with GREAT results on

ls1 240sx, sr, ka rb26dett.

no chunking, lots of smoke, decent grip. and a lot of this at mineral wells where pavement isnt the best but entries are close to 100 mph

because im cheap i run them in the front and grip is decent. run in the back with no problems either. ZERO complaints. i also run nexen300 but they are MEH.... no grip, no smoke but they last and very cheap. just run bigger size

seriously, im happy some people here run 500$ worth of front tires but its not for everyone. you have to be at least with some sense not to expect ADVAN performance out of Federals for the price. come the FUCK on.

im sorry not everyone here can drift on direzzas (Best tire for drifting i ever tried in dollar/grip/last) so federals should do just fine for a while

as far as some others

Fuzions - these things suck. they chunk and don't grip.
sumitomos - mixed. i had them, they were fine on SR. my friend had them on his KA-T pushing 400hp, they lasted 3 runs and fell apart. there are 3 models i think 1 max, ultra and all season. they are cheap and good for daily but not good for drift.
Falken ziex - sucks ass. dont grip all that well and wear quick.
st115 - good luck finding those, they are discontinued for a while. great tire.
fm901 - same as above, LOTS OF SMOKE. those things are great. wear quick.
Kelly Fierce - same as FEDERALS. i like those tires. if you have issues with chunking just reverse.
Dunlop Direzza - best tire for drifting i ever tried. smoke, grip, last and dont grease. wow.
eagle f1 goodyear - pretty decent in the front. in the rear they wear super quick but decent grip. expensive.
Kumho 711, 712 - both are horrible. for drifting 711 is better because its less prone to chunking.
Kumho SPT - i ran those front and back and i really like them in the back. decent wear, good smoke, just not impressed with $/performance. just like i said its hard to beat FEDERALs for cheap tires.
Continental Contisport - meh. they sometimes can fall apart but i had a big supply of them used (BMW DEALER) and they grip decent and at the right pressure hold up great. just dont see a point buying these new
potenza Re030 - great for front, but $$
Kumho MX - great for the front, go out too quick in the back. great grip $$
Hankook rs2 - DEAR GOD. these things flatspot like butter with a hot knife through them. dont run in rear - chunkage 101. great for front but dont daily if you drift on these, same as RT615. square wheels.

I've ran RT-615's without problems, I've never had overheating problems like other say but I run 275's on a KA.. needless to say I'm not heating them up as much as others.

the only downside I see to them is wet traction, daily driving them would be fine.. not dangerous by any means, but if you were doing some sprinted driving be ready...

i daily'd on 255/40/17 rt-615's and broke them loose even in 2nd gear with a 2871r on stock boost.

fuzion tires suck. had the zri's or w/e before 255/40 and a stock t25 sr @ 12 psi and would break loose thru 2nd on that turbo.

weak.

and i want a EBC set at 16-18psi this year....

HA.

i'll be shopping around for tires.
for no i'll be flipping my rt615's even tho your not spossed to.
but they're bald already.

maybe 2k miles on them

I agree, I got these tires on the wifes skyline. Been on there for over a year and a half. Tires are still good to go. If its good enough for okinawa's slick ass roads, should be good enough anywhere when wet. Would probably get another set for it when the time comes.

Somebody brought up NT01s. Dont forget, they are R-compound tires. They dont like it wet. I'd be very careful driving these on a DD, even tho they are DOT approved.

Anyways, anybody know the US equivalent of some Bridgestone B500si? I cant find any info about it, except on the JP Bridgestone page.

What tire would you drifters recommend for a stock KA if I'm aiming for a long lasting tire that smokes well (for the rears obviously)? Or am I stuck with little to no smoke because of my stock KA-ness?

I run the exact same sizes on a stock KA as well. Have you tried drifting on the Victras? How were they?

To answer your question.
Im running 595SS 235/40R17 reverse. No chunk, last quite a bit.
Power: probably 170 WHP (stock sr)

I hear that the 18s have problems. On FCdrift/chow's orange fc. Doesnt matter if you run it reverse, forward, sideways...still chunks.

Yeah but don't Tommy w/ the gold S13 coupe w/ all the PBM parts run 18" Federal 595s? IIRC he said he's never had problems with his 595s, and they last him a long time, even without heat cycling them.

He did say that he runs them reverse though.

This was found through a search on Ziptied.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, I thought about it more last night, and it is down to between Falken FK452 or Direzza DZ101 for the front, in 215/40/17. Maybe even Yoko S. Drives.

Think those will be ok to run with some Federal 595s in the rear in 235/40/18 without being understeer happy?

Car has HKS GT2530 turbo (pretty much almost the same exact thing as the GT2860RS, aka Disco Potato) at like 7psi btw...

good thread. but i was wondering if a griper could ask a quesion and post a somewhat useless review?

i have been running azenis rt215s on my 300whp autocross and dd car. i really like them wet traction can be kind of scary but in the dry there great. i found that break away is controled and predictable. but thy do slick up a bit when hot but if you have cool down time between laps they are fine.

has any one had any experience with the nitto nt05? i have read reviews but i cant find any one with first hand experience?

I have to agree with Brian,
my personal experience in autoX

For the price:
1 - Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star spec
2 - Falken Azenis RT615
3 - Kumho MX

RT615 does get really greasy when its overheated, but I never have problem with the Z1 star spec, I'm extremely happy with it.

This season I started using Advan A048, but no thought/opinion yet since the car just started yesterday, it has been sitting on jackstands for weeks

Starspecs are probably the best in that this range on S tires, also they are really good in the rain.... But you guys are forgetting RE050A and RE011R's... Super expensive but good too

sorry have not tried drifting. no space here, no knowledge on how to, no suspension mods on my car = no drifting. i hydroplaned on my POS Fuzions though rofl. that's what caused me to get these Victras.

Can't wait to try these out.
Had a set on when I bought the car and loved them enough to get them again. Only complaint is that they (fronts) did not wear too evenly, but that could have been from other issues now that I think about it (rubbing).

I am now on 595ss because I thought they were a good bang for the buck. So far, they seem to be wearing super fast (awaiting SPL toe links), they do not hook (breaking loose 3rd, with a 245 on a 10), decent in rain but for under 50 bucks per wheel it is hard to beat if they last anytime.

That comparison was to the DZ101's in larger sizes so I am giving and taking here.

Looking for a good front tire in the near future to put on a 9 with some stretch. RT-615? It is a DD and does see the rain often.

All drifting, and rear only.

595's are the staple for what I base tires around.
17's - 235's and up hold up well with decent grip at 35psi hot.
18's - don't even bother. Lots of chunking, especially with heavy e-brake.

Fusions
Hard as a rock, no grip, like drifting in the snow. Seemed to last a long time

Kumho MX
By far one of the best tires I've driven on in the rear. Got them hot and greasy, didn't last too long though. White clouds everywhere.

Avid H4S
Got them from the dealer with 70% tread, pleasant suprize with grip, smoke and wear.

Sceptor
Off brand that I get through work. Priced the same as 595's but more slipery. Same smoke and wear as 595's.

FRONT
595's
OK, too much understeer with welded diff.

P Zero Corsa
Fucking money. Grip everywhere with good feel and control. They don't make them anymore and they cost a bank load.

Daum! I just tried Michelin Pilot Sport Cup's on the front of my S14. 225/40/18 was ridicules grip! got em cheap used from a porsche road race car. insane grip, no feathering, no problem with insane abuse all day, left foot braking 100ft lock ups, minimal flat spotting, insane grip cold or hot, awesome size too.

Oh and the BFG KDW's remain my fav rears.... again havent tried star specs, nor advans or feddies, but I have tried DZ101's and KDW's are smokey'ier, grippier, and last longer for me. plus nylon chords before steel chords=win

event yesterday, PS Cups front, KDW rear.

RE050A's suck ass for rears, they chord, chunk, and are slick'er than deer guts. for fronts who knows. now the RE050's may be a different story (A is for all-season) so the compound is probably quite a bit better on the RE050's but i've never tried them.
