tachometer cutting out

Ok, for the last 8 years or so the tach has been cutting out. When it works it reads correctly but will just all the sudden drop to 0 and stay there for a while then all of the sudden start working again. Is this common?

if its your speedo then you have a bad speed sensor if its your tach i believe there is a sensor on the rear of your diff in which might be going out on ya.

Word. Same happen to me a couple of years ago. I simply bought another cluster and swapped out the tachometer. Works like a charm now...at least when I drive it...sigh

easy fix, just go get a GIANT tach and stick it on your dash somewhere, like right where you need to see. then dont hook it up. just the lights so its pretty looking.. Then you.. oh wait i forgot, this is a nissan forum.. whoops.. well i guess you should just swap the cluster and do it right.

Ok, some things that should be known about me. I don't know a lot about working on cars but I am very serious about it regardless of the limited amount of mods I have or it not being a high dollar car. I realize it has potential and most of these cars have been beat up on. I know some of my posts are very anal and maybe simple but thats just me trying to get good full answers. I am not into taking the cheap stitch it together I guess you say type of route just want to fix things right.

I think that guy was being sarcastic...there seems to be alot of that going on around here. If you want good answers when it comes to these types of problems, you should head over to NICO forums. Most of the people there tend not to act like assholes. Unless you have micro-soldering skills and have the schematics for that tach gauge...I suggest you get an aftermarket tach, or buy a cluster and take the tach out.

How much does does the cluster usually run? I have an se with the white gauges. I assume what u mean by the cluster is the gauges (speedo, tach, temp and gas) ? I thought it would be a sensor problem and the sensor would be located somewhere else and not in the actual gauge itself. I almost think its a grounding issue. When my amp isnt hooked up to the battery it seems to happen much less. I know that sounds wierd.
