Good place to get multi-strand high-quality wire? For now it's just for a headlight re-wire so my Cibie's work better, but in the future when I redo all the wiring I'll need a good source. Everywhere near me in Washington just sells crappy single strand stiff as a board stuff. Also I'd love a wide selection of colors so I can stay somewhat true to the OEM wiring color scheme.

Toby, what kind and size box should i make for my s14, I just ordered a pair of Alpine SWS-10D2 and haven't been able to decide on a sealed, ported, or bandpass (i already have one but i am not to fond of them). I will be primarily listening to metal/dubstep and the occasional rap song.

I sell 18 gauge by the foot: orange, blue, translucent blue, green, white/green, black, brown, gray, pink, yellow, white and red. This is the standard size I use for alarms, remote starters etc... so I don't have a reason to use 20 or 22 gauge. Let me know if you need pricing.

You can easily find 20 gauge on the internet, but you have to buy it by the quantity... typically 250 feet minimum per color or even more if it's a striped color.

If you want 20 gauge, you should be able to call up Chase @ Chase Bays and I'm pretty sure he will sell you just the wiring.

For the music you listen to, I would say sealed. If you primarily listened to rap, then I would of said vented. I can go into a whole book on the pros and cons of each box design, but I just don't have the time for that. So are here are some quick pros/cons of each:

Sealed: smaller enclosure size, cheaper to build, tight response, very linear output... which means lower frequency notes will be closer in output to the higher bass notes compared to that of other enclosure designs, handles power well across its entire frequency response. Enclosure size is more forgiving than a vented or bp.

Vented: larger than a sealed enclosure, more expensive to build than a sealed, actually can handle just as much power as a sealed until you drop below the tuning frequency... then watch out, a little sloppier response than a sealed box, not as linear as a sealed... obviously because of the vent. However, because of the vent you can achieve 3db or more over a sealed enclosure. The volume of the box, vent size and length need to be carefully calculated to achieve the best performance from the sub dependent on the sub's thiele-small parameters.

Bandpass: typically a little larger than a vented enclosure, more expensive to build than a vented, but combines the sound properties of both the vented and sealed. The front chamber volume, rear chamber volume, port size and length need to be carefully calculated to achieve the best performance from the sub dependent on the sub's thiele-small parameters.

Now all of these pros and cons I listed are for the average enclosure for each respective category. I can build some huge ass sealed box that doesn't handle power very well. Or I can build a crazy vented box that plays really low. But in either of those extreme examples, you are going to greatly suffer some of the other pros compared to that of an average enclosure.

Any truth to a bad designed Sealed will be low dB. Bad Vented will sound shitty but a bad bandpass will blow voice coils?

Sure, you can easily make any box design sound/perform bad. Sealed would be the hardest to screw up though because the only variable is the size of the enclosure... assuming you are using the proper thickness of material, proper type of material, proper bracing, proper assembly techniques etc. But these would be common among all enclosure types. This is why a sealed is the most forgiving. So if you buy some random sealed pre-fab enclosure for a 12", there's a better chance it will sound good over a random pre-fab vented.. or even worse, a random pre-fab bandpass for the same 12". Take a bandpass for example: you could get the front chamber the correct size, the rear chamber the correct size and the diameter of the port the correct size... but if you get the length of the port incorrect then it throws off the whole thing.

hey...i had a python security/alarm system in my car, but i replaced the fuse box harness and didn't connect the system's wires to the fusebox harness (by the steering column). now my car is not cranking, ignition relay just clicks when key is turned. do u think the system has something to do with car not cranking?

also what security system do u recommend. i need to change the old one to a better new one.

Distortion leads to damage, plain and simple. It doesn't matter how you get there, distortion is bad. Just because an enclosure isn't ideal doesn't mean you are going to hurt anything. If you have the ideal enclosure with the ideal power, you can still easily blow a subwoofer. However, if the enclosure is tuned/built properly, the system is tuned with an o-scope and the speakers can handle the rated power you are pushing, then there is a much slimmer chance of blowing speakers.

I compare it to a vehicle engine. It doesn't matter if you have a fully built engine or a stock engine... if you rev it way beyond its redline for a long period of time it's going to fail.

Toby, I'm beyond a car audio novice so I have questions that may be too stupid for this thread:

My daily is a 2008 Honda Fit base, which means no AUX input or ability to play MP3/WMA CD's.

However, from what I've seen, the panels to make a DIN sized head-unit fit always fail to match the other interior plastics and fit without unsightly gap.

That said, is there a way to improve sound and add the ability to play music from my iPod without resorting to mismatch panel and a new stereo?

I polished everything.

Grits:

24, 36, 50, 80, 120, 180, 240, 320, 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000

Then I polished with Hoosier metal polish... it's by far the most amazing metal polish on the planet.

As long as your radio has an XM, SAT, AUX or CD button, then you can use a direct input module to get iPod audio into your radio... something like this:

Otherwise an aftermarket Alpine is going to give you far better sound quality and much better input selection. If you are doing a single din, I think the Metra kit looks pretty darn good for a dash kit:



If you do a double DIN then the Scosche looks better in my opinion:

Toby, the OEM amp finally took a dump in my S14 and I already bypassed it. I didnt realized how much it made of a difference in my car. My question is, what is your recommendation for a budget (cheap) 4 ch amp to replace the OEM one? I got Polk speakers all around with a JVC head unit that I got from you a year ago (cant remember which one).
