SR20DE clacking noise after sitting for a while.

Noticed my engine makes a clacking, sort of tractor sound noise if I have let the car sit for a while.
I put it into gear and then it's not so loud.
Put my foot on the clutch and it starts up again.

But then after a few seconds of driving it disappears.

What would be causing this?

I do not know much about the engine but I do remember a friends Mitsi having a similar sound in the mornings after sitting idle and it was sticky tapits or at least I think that's what he called them.

Thanks for posting.
The noise is coming directly from the engine.
I have been doing some research and it appears to be the VVT actuator getting lazy.
Thing is I went and took the car for a long and really floored it.
Since then the noise has become quieter.

It was terrible before, as it sounded like a diesel engine.
