I honestly never really read this build threads unless they are some insane swap which I must see done.
But gotta say man, this reminds me of every car project I have ever taken on. Especially the first few when everything is still pretty scary haha. Just started a MKII VW project and its the first time I mess with a watercooled VW, also first time I mess with something FWD. This thread honestly made me want to write up something for this MKII since its just so alien and wierd to me.... Any way bad ass car, bad ass build. Nice to see cars bringing people together.

Unfortunately, not a whole lot. I took a few pictures of it before winter came... But my friend is having issues with his computer and I haven't got a hold of them yet. I did take a few myself though... Then I pulled the motor out to do a few things, and it started snowing once or twice a week. I work in the snow so I have not yet found the time to finish my project, but all of the parts are finally in place as of last week! I will be running a Tomei M7960, Nismo 740cc , and Nistune ECU. Big thanks to BoostinIX for the sweet local deal on the Tomei turbo. Trying to get everything together for the first drift event of the season, can't wait!

Build is pretty awesome, couldn't see all the pictures at work but I'll go through this again when I get home. What was the process like painting your interior white? I want to do the same once I get my cage installed, I have a nice compressor and decent HVLP gun, just no experience.

A bit of an update… Found some spare time and my dad [or the coffee] got me all revved up to start working! I had to grind down the motor mount bracket a few MM to clear the turbo, and painted that back up and reinstalled. Stuck the transmission back on and bolted everything up tight. No pictures of any of that, it’s mostly boring stuff.
Then I tossed the injectors in, Nismo 740cc. Stuck the new Tomei oil pan on! About time I got this… Then dropped the motor back in! It’s about time! I’ve been so busy this winter I have hardly had any time or motivation to work on the car. Now that the motor is back in I can do small tasks day-to-day and finally get it reassembled and ready for a tune! I have a few other things I plan to do, but I need to get the car running and drivable before I get concerned with other things. I also took a quick picture of my interior. It came out pretty nice!

Haha as per Thomas's request... Here's a picture of a Nismo shift knob I won on Yahoo Japan a few weeks back. As soon as I saw it, I got in touch with Kunio from GTR-Garage. Kunio said in his 10 years on Yahoo Japan, he has never seen one of these shift knobs that includes the original packaging!

A bit of an update... I've got just about everything either installed, or have some sort of solution. I am still looking for someone to tune the car. Unfortunately, it has been a bit harder than I anticipated. I have sent out a few e-mails... hopefully someone will get back to me. I hope to get the car running within the month. Also, I recieved a very special e-mail from Kunio at GTR-Garage last night... be sure to stay tuned!

Just throwing it out there for the OP- Instead of that Nightshades stuff, try Testors Candy Apple Red spray. It's model car paint but holds up very well. I've done it on several sets of taillights and they all still look fresh. If you prefer, after that, go over it with some high gloss clear...just a suggestion.

When we last left off, I had the motor in and it was time to reassemble everything and go for a tune. Well I began getting everything back together, and was well on my way. I felt about a week out from needing the tune, so I decided to give the tuner a call. Unfortunately, one of the more reputable local tuners said that he would not tune my Nistune (although it is listed on their website as one of the platforms they work with). Great... So I started to ask around. Sent some e-mails, made some phone calls... Nobody called back. The first drift event of the year is right around the corner and I still have a lot to get done! I spent the whole winter working like a maniac and hardly touched the car, so I was way behind on my 'plans' already. Kept working on the car and hoping for the best. Then, I finally got a hold of a tuner who was willing to tune my setup. Quickly buttoned everything up, raised it to 4x4 status (a friend tipped me off they would just call me back and charge shop labor to raise it anyway), and winched it up on the trailer! Here's how it was looking when I was right about finished...
Hauled it out for the tune... It was a bit nerve wracking, it is the first time I have done any of this. It took a bit longer than I expected, but I finally got the call to start headed over to pick her up! I am just glad they didn't call and tell me my shit fell apart LOL. It did ~267 HP at ~15 PSI. Apparently the Tomei wastegate isn't doing me any favors, so I will look into upgrading to an electronic boost controller eventually. I chose to keep the boost lower, because it is already ~60-70 HP jump from where I was at. I took a couple test laps around the lot when I got back, what a blast! I am going to have to start taking traction more seriously perhaps, my car is not set up for much grip. Hopefully this will help? That's all for now! Stay tuned!
