Axles/rear end identification?

I bought an S13 hatch with this rear end & axles in it. The rear end looks to be an s14 pumpkin (speedo sensor port on the snout), Greddy S13 diff cover with a Kaaz 1.5 inside and 6 bolt axles.

Can someone confirm what I am looking at here? Can someone also confirm how much power this axle setup is capable of?

Looks more like a J30 or Z32 diff based on the ABS rings on the axle stubs. Most R200's will handle quite a bit of power before failing. Your axles will most likely be the first to go.

LOL

Not a greddy diff cover, looks like a regular S13 ABS R200 diff, No way to tell whats inside specifically without pulling the cover

Power should be fine you won't break the insides. Like previously stated axles are the weak point

Those axles are stock, not a Greddy cover, and how did you end up deciding its a Kaaz diff inside?

I was told by the previous ownrr that it was a kaaz 1.5. To me it exhibits behavior consistent with an lsd, as it sometimea will hop in a tight turn or u turn. Anyway, I guess the axles aren't as special as I thought.

Could also be a shimmed VLSD if you dont inspect it.

Yeah you are left with popping it open and taking a look. I am not really sure why you would change diff housings when going to a Kaaz, that is something you are more likely to do when putting in a VLSD out of a J30 etc.

not an s13 diff, they dont have bushings in the front 2 mounting points.

s13, s14, j30 abs sensor is in the pinion.

z32 and q45 have the sensors on the outputs, but dont have 6 bolt axles.

wtf is going on here?

Axles don't have to match the diff cover/housing, just the internals of the diff. So J30 is what the housing is, but wtf had 6 bolt axle stubs with ABS?

J30 also came with 6 bolt..... Its not a GTR diff, output stubs and input pinion are different. S13 cover (stock), 4 bolt pinion, looks J30 to me unless it was just out of an ABS model

Yes they did but they still did not have the ABS rings on them because the sensor was in the snout of the diff.

J30 with 6 bolt axle stubs.

6 bolt with ABS is a total stumper to me. Maybe a super late year Q45?!?!? Hard to say. Has a mismatched bolt on the lower right, did anyone else notice that too?

With that said to the O/P do you know the axle ratio? If not you can count revolutions of the driveshaft vs revolutions of the wheel to determine a ratio. That is jack the car up, and spin the wheel, while counting how many times the driveshaft spin.

Spin the wheel 4 times and the driveshaft goes 20 times around, then you take 20/4 = 5.0 rear ratio. Spin the wheel 4 times and the driveshaft goes 10 times around you take 10/4=2.5 ratio

If you sor the ratio it may help everyone narrow down what you have. With that said the flanges really make no difference. However if you want to know what type of differential you actually have in there, you'll need to take it out and remove cover (or if you're slick, drain fluid and stick a cam in the drain or fill hole to see...

This thread has turned out to be more fun than I originally thought it would be. Thanks all for participating. Since I was mounting up side skirts today, I put the back end on jack stands and took some more pictures of the rear end. Most of them didn't turn out but here's one of the snout and the blocked off port (abs port or speedo sensor?)

and here's the rear suspension setup (suspension pron).

Interesting on the blocked ABS port on the snout too. Makes me think myoriginal assumption is right in thinking it's a late Q45 or something strange.

With that said, nice arms. I've got the same ones, but mine are all dirty haha.

i have a 94 q diff in my car, and i have a 97+ q diff.

both have rings on each output, but they are both 5 bolt.

i have never seen in person, and cant find on the internet, any r200 diff with dual rings and 6 bolt axles.

what i do notice is there is usually a dust cover over the rings when they are on the outputs, and this diff does not have them.

Hmmm, now I'm really duped. I figured they did some last minute shit in the later years to get rid of parts they had on the shelf. That front ABS block plate really maeks me wonder for sure.

well, that is quite interesting. I have searched around and have not found another diff option that has 6 bolt output shafts that also have the abs gear rings. So maybe this is what I have.

Not that I was ever worried about the durability of the internals of the differential. I don't know whether this should increase my confidence and willingness to put some mickey Thompson drag radials on the back or if I still will need Mazworks or DSS axles. Anybody know what hp this diff's output shafts and splines are rated at? I searched and couldn't find anything and don't guess that this is a common LSD.

The pic I posted doesnt mean that's what you have. There are cars running 8s on stock diff and axles.
