Spiderman Reboot. Rami and McGuire out!

W...T....F....

I seriously don't see this going well. I just don't see how they can do an origin story AGAIN when the first one was only 10 years ago and it was so good.

January 11, 2010 - Damn, Sam Raimi, you've made us proud. As much as we're sorry to see you go, we respect the fact that you've stuck to your guns and told Sony to stick their webs where the sun don't shine.

That's right, folks. Sam Raimi has left the Spider-Man franchise, which essentially means that Spider-Man 4 is no more and the wallcrawler is now getting a from-scratch reboot from the studio instead. Tobey Maguire is also done with the red and blue suit, and in fact Sony is saying (via Twitter) that the reboot will go back to high school with the character and be released in 2012.

Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke had the story first, saying that "Mike Fleming and I have just confirmed that Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after franchise director Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, Mike Fleming is told, the studio will focus on a reboot script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took place ... at [a] meeting on the lot today."

DH goes on to say that Raimi insisted he couldn't make Sony's date or "go forward creatively. And, so, once he said 'That's it,' Sony Pictures co-chairman [Amy] Pascal and Columbia Pictures' Matt Tolmach decided they didn't want to replace him and instead chose to reboot the franchise." Points to Sony for making the smart choice here.

We've got a call in to Sony right now and we'll update here as soon as we hear back from them! But, dang, this is a big one.

UPDATED: Here is Sony's official statement on the reboot: "Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager dealing with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises. The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," said Sam Raimi.

"We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else's hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable," said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio's chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. "Now everything begins anew, and that's got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can't wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012."

"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films. As we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film

Kirsten Dunst was the WORST MJ ever. I hated what Raimi turned Spidey into by the third installment.

The really hope they do this franchise right this time around. (I liked the first and second spidey movies, but the third just really left this sour taste in my mouth.)

I agree with you. The first two were really good, but the third just SUCKED.

I just don't see them being able to top the first movie.

I don't think ppl are going to take too kindly to the whole re-boot thing.
As much as I didn't care too much for the 3rd installment,
I was hoping to see how things developed from there onwards.

Sucks when corporate politics gets in the way of things.
Oh well, I guess the whole super-hero thing has run it's course anyhow.
This isn't good/

I'm actually rooting for this.

I'm crossing my fingers, although highly unlikely, that the new director will stick similarly to the source.

One thing that REALLY peeved me, albeit small detail to some of you, were his web shooting skills.

He's a fucking nerd. He couldn't have learned the knowhow to create that synthetic spidersilk? He couldn't have fashioned quality web shooters that allowed for different spraying types?

Spidey having grown a set of webshooters instead of making them would be like Wolverine having a fucking adamantium transfused into his blood instead of fused bones.

Granted, the first Spidey movie was well done, but the second they do DoubleVillains really fucks shit up. 3 AND 2 were steaming piles of shit.

Thinking about the last trainwreck of a movie makes this is less upsetting. Not to sold on the high school re-shoot either. I can just imagine a bunch of whiney high school drama in a movie like that.

I say leave it where it is.

Dead.

Evil Dead 2 is far and away my favorite horror comedy of all time, you bite your tongue

and Campbell hasn't been in anything worth time watching since Jack of All Trades.

I really didn't care for that Crouching Tiger at all.
I thought it was one of the most over-rated Chinese films of all time.
It just didn't deliver as a martial arts film,
nor quite exactly as a drama.

Comparable films like 'Hero' and 'House of Flying Daggers' (dir. Zhang Yimou),
to me at least were much better done.

Some ppl like Ang Lee's films, and he's not the worst director by far.
I just think his films come across as being tedious and ring hollow as far as dramatic and technical substance.
To each and their own.

If I had to choose Ang Lee's best film,
it would probably be the Ice Storm (which is technically well made, even if painfully dry)

Ang Lee's best movie was Eat Drink Man Woman.........

I blame Twilight. Marvel wants that lucrative tweener audience so they're putting him back in high school. Rob Pattenson as young Peter Parker = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Think about it. Combine the tweener girl romance audience with the comic book nerd audience and that's a guaranteed blockbuster, assuming the movie doesn't totally blow.

Burn Notice on USA. Bruce is GREAT!

Additionally... Spidey 3 SUCKED, and I honestly wasn't "blown away" by 1 or 2.

My confidence is not high for this reboot.

Won't be out for a while, according to imdb.

I think it will have to be seen regardless of how horrible it may be.

I think they should cast Michael Cera as Peter Parker.

- Your thoughts.

same. i remember everybody making a big deal out of xmen and spiderman when they came out, and i wasn't impressed... then the Batman reboot came along and changed the game, finally making a superhero movie that didn't look like cartoon bullshit. i hope they do the same to Spiderman, and maybe make a character i give a shit about.
