Clicking Noise from Climate Control

I have a weird clicking noise when the blower is set on Face, Foot, Foot/Defroster, and Defroster, BUT it doesn't click when it's set on Foot/Face. Everything works like it should, but the noise is getting unbearable.

I'm almost positive the gears are stripped from one or more of the motors, but I'm not sure which one. The sound is coming from somewhere in the center of the dash near the climate control so I'm guessing its either the Mode door, Air mix door, or Bi-level motor.

If anyone has a for sure idea which motor it would be please let me know so I have an idea of where to look b/c ripping out the dash is a PITA.

PROBLEM SOLVED: The grinding is coming from the Bi-Level Motor (Part Number: 27736-70F00) due to the gears being stripped. Part retails new for about $50-70. I've been getting a couple of PM's about this, so I'll post up how to fix, it's pretty easy.

1. Go to Body & Trim > Instrument Panel section on the FSM.
2. Remove A/T Finisher or M/T lever boots. (2 on diagram)
3. Remove Center ventilation assembly. (7)
4. Remove Cluster lid C and audio. (8)
5. Remove Glove Box assembly. (10)

From here you can see the Bi-Level Motor. There's 2 screws and a harness holding it on the heater unit. Once removed you will have another 2 screws holding it on to the mounting bracket. The part number I gave you is only for the Bi-Level Motor (aka ACTUATOR ASSY-FRESH AIR as described on Nissan FAST), so make sure to keep the 4 screws and bracket.

Enjoy.

Google search works wonders. Having this same problem where clicking happens on all settings except Face/Floor setting.

I actually found the problem by accident: was removing wiring from PO's attempted stereo and alarm install. After all the aftermarket stuff was removed I noticed this motor was unplugged (you can see it when the stereo is removed). Once connected, it started with the click-click-click.

Went ahead and opened up the motor and found several teeth broken on the gears in the full closed position. So the noise is because the motor thinks it can't get to full close and keeps slipping on the broken gear teeth. I don't see anyway to fix it unless you have access to little plastic gears (for the DIY types).

Thanks for the part number. Let's see what other gremlins I can find from the previous owner.

Thanks Lost180 for opening up this dead thread. I'm actually having the same problem myself and thanks to your posting you actually helped me figure out what the problem is & how to repair it.

One of the moderators should post it as a Stickie somewhere so everyone who has this problem in the future knows how to recognize it and fix it when they come across it.

There's two actuators. The other one is kinda near the driver's side knee. Might need to verify where the sound is coming from.

And this zombie bump is actually one I needed. I have searched for awhile for that part # as my vents are stuck. in the defrost position.

Yup, it is this one. Should have a brown connector. I had the same problem a while back. Mine always clicked in the foot position. Most likely the gears are grinded. I had to disassemble mine and put in better plastic gears.

I think since yours is a 180sx you can buy this one.

Yeah mine is a 180sx. That is the one I ordered and ended up not being the one behind the head unit as people said. So where abouts is this to replace it and what do I need to remove to get to it?

It's very hard to explain

remove red and it should be to your right (In your case since you're rhd it will be to your left) attached to this black box where blue is pointing.

You were right, took that panel off and was right on the side where my left knee would be (rhd) replaced it and no more clicking and all vent modes work. Stoked. Just need to re gas the AC so she's cold. Thank you heaps

I've been thinking about this. I wonder if the gear could be 3d printed and just the gear replaced

I read on it comes with the heater core, but those are used and would eventually break too.

SKU: 27736-70F00
Other Names: Actuator Assembly-Fresh Vent
Description:
Fresh air.

Condition: New
Notes: PARTS: Part included in heater assembly.

Frsport claims to have it, but the pic link is broke and NO ONE else has them. so kinda suspect to be honest.

Hmmm, that is a bit weird. I would go into diagnostics mode and see if it goes through the cycle. If not I am not too sure what to do to be honest.

I know when I had a issue with it not going to one of the cycles it let me know through diagnostics mode, which made me realize I messed up one wire. However your car came with the DCC from factory I am assuming.

might be time to install a manual lever/wire contraption instead of relying on the fancy motorized parts. serious? Not serious? ha ha? ha...

When I get A/C finally I will be doing something. nothing is gonna stop me from that. So. yeah
