sr20 turbo comes loose
about once a week. the turbo where it bolts to the manifold comes loose. no matter how tight they get even with the locking tabs they seem to come loose and leak? whyyyyy everyone i have talkd to say all sr's do that. even with the exhaust hung right and tons of support they still come loose. some ppls say take off the manifold and have the nuts tack welded. what should i do i havent tried red lock tight yet. but i dont want to becuse the back bolts closes to the block are so hard to get too. i can easily tighten the outer 2 closest to the firewall. plz helpppp. any good fixes

your locking tabs but be really worn out or your not bending them close enough to the nut.
Im talking take a punch to them to get them as close as possible I put a brand new set on mine 5 years ago and mine has still not came loose Either that or your gasket is blown out now, which will happen when you have an exhaust leak for a while

just weld a tiny spot on the 4 nuts. its will be enough to keep the bolts from backing out and your gasket from blowing. and when you need to unbolt it just break the weld with a punch and hammer
drain the oil and coolant unbolt the 4 water neck bolts take out intercooler piping take out intake take out breather tank (3 bolts) and hoses take off the manifold (14mm) unbolt down pipe and or turbo elbow there are 2 oil lines and 2 coolant. one going to the turbo and one carrying away disconnect the coolant line on the block under the exhaust manifold. it connects to the side of the turbo that faces the wheels disconnect the oil line on the block which is right under the coolant line you just took off disconnect the oil return under the turbo that runs to the oil pan unbolt the coolant line on the turbo itself that faces the block /9just pick up and tilt the manifold and turbo together and get a wrench on it. it runs to the back of the block which is a pita. should come right out change as many gaskets as you can. may as well since its out. fr sport has good package deals with everything you need to replace |

If you wanna bend the tabs good enough I recommend removing the whole manifold, Buying a Mr.Copper manifold gasket from Enjuku (its resuable) and replacing the tabs and the gasket. Some circuit sport Steel braided lines help wonders when taking off the turbo so I recommend that. But with the whole manifold removed you will have better acess to the nuts and tabs

Turbo Gasket
Accessories Nissan RWD SR20DET - Exhaust Gaskets - Enjuku Racing Parts, LLC and +1 on changing the oil and coolant lines to SS. makes it a lot easier should be able to get it all here. i would change the exhaust manifold gasket and 4 bolt turbo gasket. 5 bolt turbo outlet, and 3 bolt downpipe gaskets depend on what your taking out. my first time took me like 4 hours. second time 1.5 hours. its really not hard. lube up the bolts the night before. take your time. there are plenty of write ups on it and try to search more rather than making threads on this forum. most people are not as nice as we are. |
