Can't rev past 5.5k??

96' S14
Cant rev past 5.5k, and it acts like it's a rev limiter. Bad MAF or what??

Mods:
OBX Header, eBay exhaust, 248 Intake side cam swap.

CEL Codes:
14 Speed sensor
32 EGR
77 Rear O2, Because of header
108 EVAP volume control

5.5k rpm limit is usually speed sensor, since you have a code for that, start there.

It hasn't been plugged up. It just started to do this about a week or two ago.

It took a few cycles then, you wanna argue some more about why your car is acting stupid?
Try this, fix all the codes so the check engine light turns off!

So you think its the speed sensor? I'm not trying to argue I'm just wondering why that would be if it's not even Hooked up?

That's why, hook it up, if it's faulty replace it! If you cut the speed signal wire from the ecu, fix it. If it ain't broke don't fix!

I went through this about a month ago. Cam timing was off by 1 tooth. Check that. Before that I had checked 5 speed sensor, MAF (tried 3 diff ones), tps (voltages checked out). I even changed the dizzy.

But ill bet its cam timing since you have the 248 cam swap.

I was thinking it might have been the timing. I guess I'll be checking that soon then!
And I haven't had the time to get the right Speed sensor. Right now the only thing in there is an S13 one just to plug up the hole. I was hoping I could get one soon, but I'll be checking the timing soon though. Thanks!

Oh and do you think I need to set the 248 to 3teeth CCW since its messing up at 4 teeth? I've seen both the 3 teeth and 4 teeth but I don't know which one is better. I guess 3 teeth then. I new to redrill my old one.....

I'm still standing behind speed sensor, although I couldn't duplicate your problem moving the 248 cam either way, I must be doing it wrong lol. When I disconnected the speed sensor, I didn't have to wait for a couple starts for the limiter to show with a code. I also left the speed sensor connected during the first 2 adjustments of the cam. Then again this car was problem free before I F'd with it. Hope you get it fixed though, G/L

Sorry, I wouldn't know how many teeth to move the 248 cams. As I have stock cams, all I know is I tried everything and it turned out cams were off by 1 tooth after the rebuild.

So did you just use the light and turned the distributor to correct the timing?

No, cam timing was off by 1 tooth. Had to pop off valve cover and reposition the cams. I'm just saying I wouldn't know which way to turn the 248 cam to fix it.

If you don't wanna take my advice it's fine. I used a car with the same mods as you and tried to duplicate your problem. So if you really are trying to fix your issue just document what you have tried, are trying or will try... for future searches/ers. This thread should not be a six pager!

So it did it again today, but this was the worst it has done it. I was getting on the on ramp, dropped it to 2nd, and when I hit 5.5K,it bounced off once like it would have been the fuel cut off, so I shifted into 3rd. Absolutely no throttle response, RPMs slowly went down from 5k and wouldn't get any response until it got back down to around 500rpm then back to idle. Does it sound like timing still or more of a speed sensor? Sorry to keep bumping this, just figured I would post it since it

Just fix the damn speed sensor, then you won't have to question if its the sensor.

Typical response. Right now I just have more important things I need to keep my money for than to pay $50 for a little sensor. Will I buy one? Yea, just not very soon, but I will be buying one.

This is happening randomly. Today I was driving home, dropped it to 2nd, and went over 5.5k RPM just fine. So then after that, I just pushed in the clutch and revved all the way to 6k just fine. I'm picking up the other ECU now, but on the way to my dads house I will try and see if it does it any more. I'll swap out the ECU tonight and drive it some and test it out. We're trying to find the timing light, but can't find it right now so if it persists then ill definitally check timing, then get the right speed sensor of timing is right.

Ok guys. Looks like it is my ECU. Swapped the auto ECU in, drive up to 6k 1-4th fine, revved up all the way fine. Stopped, swapped the manual one back in, took off and it wouldnt go over 5.5k in 1st or 2nd. Stopped again, swapped auto ECU back in, drove, and it was perfect again. New ECU it is!

It's not the ecu, just in case you ever want to get to the bottom of your problem for future searchers, at least, try a manual ecu! When, If you ever upgrade ecu's or get a tune done you have to remember to tell yourself you have a manual with auto ecu. Or fix the problem.

Ok so another update guys. So it only does it when it's trying to accelerate. I was in 2nd, took off to 5500 and it bounced off, so I pushed in the clutch and it revved all the way up to 6000 just fine. Did it 3 times. So it's only bouncing while trying to accelelerate. I have a timing light and I'm going to check it tomorrow. But idk why it wouldn't do it with the auto ECU in it.

Guys something amazing happened! I plugged A speed sensor in, and guess what! It still bounced off/cutoff at 5500! -__-
And if course our timing light trigger is messed up so we gotta find another timing light....
