That's great lookin! Steel wool choice looks a little thick, with something like a catch can, surface area is king, so I use the 'fine' or 'ultra fine' weaves of stainless. Smallest you can get without it getting sucked back through your mesh.

Looks an awful lot like the stainless steel scouring pads you use in commercial kitchens to clean crap off before sending it through a dish washer.
Nothing wrong with using materials that are convenient and cheap / free.

Here's a c5 vette i'm brownin out at my shop.
Will have a full ALMS spec GT2 cage in it. Here is the starting of the rear part of the cage. Made some shock tower tops on the CNC plasma You can still easily adjust the shocks. Plate is 3/8" thick per rules. I will keep you guys posted. This car has some retarded weight reduction going on. Here is some engine mounts I made for my vette. Dry sump tank mount. S14 trunk mount rad for Liquid to air intercooler we did. New toy Worlds first LSA s14 S14 steering bearing tube. Lsa hood fitment issues. S14 with quick change Marcus did. The quick change is also able to be quickly changed. lol Tube front on Forsberg's old 350z G-Force GSR for the s14 Offset mount Marcus made Aluminum front impact bar. 5 layers and $900 worth of DEI heat film on a S14 Bearing tube steering shaft. I will try to post more stuff that we have been doing.

Since we are cutting off the frame rails behind the crossmember I made a sweet back bone for the rails. We will box the 2 bars together.

A quick-change rear end has an additional rear cover with two big gears that let you quickly change your final drive. You set your primary gearing in your gearbox to whatever suits the engine's powerband, and then set your final drive for a particular track/etc.
Here's a pic of a live-axle one opened up

Can you guys get the part numbers for everything but the center housing by chance? I know of a guy local who has the winters center housing for dirt cheap, but I'd still need to buy the other components. Winter's catalog on their site is from like 2009 and only has the number for the unit as a whole. -.-

The more he does the better he'll get at it. Definitely has a ways to go to be OEM quality though. The shaping work needs some attention, doesn't have a very good flow to it... edgy around the gauge opening etc. And remember, stuff like this always looks worse in person. Pictures hide a lot... so it most likely needs more work than what we are even seeing. The gloss black is simply a preference though... he could simply finish it in a texture and satin black if he chose to. Keep at it ziptiemechanic, you'll only get better.
Give me a shout if you ever need any pointers or want some product recommendations. For what it's worth, I very rarely use fiberglass mat/resin on this type of stuff. Resin simply doesn't bond to plastic very well... so it can "lift" from the plastic over time with vibrations or flexing. |

Played with Lincoln Electric's new virtual mig machine at SEMA. That thing is pretty cool. Anyone else get a chance to play with it?
Also, saw blu808's vette while I was there. Fab work is definitely as good in person as it looks on the web. Good work, man.

I assume because it's $450 more, and the 165 is strong enough for most things.
