Geez guys, not saying to go from KA-T to KA every time you have to smog. Auto-pass is just a couple hundred bucks.

Just saying in the unfortunate event that you DO get reffed, at least it's an option. And once you have the ref-pass paperwork, keep it handy, it'll help keep you out of trouble, at least from my experience.

I've had SR for the last 5 or so years, drive in SoCal every day, and no problems really... I dunno maybe I just get lucky *shrug* Good luck guys. LoL

Never did I say it would pass smog did I? Just said as a result they are getting cleaner, not the main intention of FI but a side effect. $1500 is a lot but when you are talking about something under $10k a lot of guys will spring for the added features of FI on a bike.

And yeah sad truth of shipping, bunker oil is nasty stuff. What is stupid is we let these things dock here in california yet for years we banned Navy mine hunters from coming here because of how much they polluted. Guess the Navy was not greasing palms quite enough.

I'll never understand how people outside of California talk the most crap about California--solely on smog laws. How difficult is it to own two cars? One for the track and the other for daily driving. If you really want to drive around in a car with an illegal engine, you'll find a way or deal with the consequences. Or how about actually purchasing a car that's job is to go fast to deliver pizzas? Seems like most people that complain are too lazy or too simple to think of a way to do it right the first time.

Eh California is not as bad as everyone puts it out to be. Just pass smog NA and swap in the SR or KA-det. As long as you don't drive like a dumbass or have a "fan boy" looking car, no cops will hassle you. Been SR'd/Turbo for 5+ years as my daily. If your shit is mismatched, super slammed, obnoxiously loud... Cops will fuck with you.

So what if you are bringing a car into the state from one without emissions? From the look of it you can't register it here in which case I guess it just sits in the garage.

I didn't say it's not a lot of work, but you can do some things to make the job a lot easier. For example, my mafs wiring has a weather pack so i literally unplug the z32 mafs and plug in my stock mafs. I then swap injectors and ecus and the car is back on the stock map. Everything else is just bolt on stuff. I've had my car smogged with oil feed/drain lines plugged, intercooler pipes bagged, and a boost gauge going to 0 lol.

..with that being said, I have preferred to just pay a reasonable price to have it passed

Not everyone has that luxury of a cheap hookup though. I've never had any issues until I went to shady spots like huge car meets and such where the cops are looking for people like us.

You can put all the cali equipment on the car to have it smogged. Most newer cars these days tend to be the same so its mainly only an issue on older cars. Someone correct me if I am wrong but the biggest difference on the 240 side of things is the ECU in the S13. Comparing my Cali vert to my friends Fed Hatch that was really the only difference unless someone did everything but forgot to switch ECUs.

THE ONLY difference between the emissions systems on cali and non-cali 240sx's is the EGR temp sensor. Federal 240's will NEVER throw a code 32 because they do not have the sensor to monitor the EGR operation. Non-cali cars should pass cali smog almost always, it would be a rare occasion that you need to swap ANYTHING. I've smogged plenty of federal 240's here in cali, NO ISSUES...

Yeah I knew it was something small like that for a 240.

As for the comment about swapping smog equipment it was for older cars. My step brother had to swap a bunch of crap before the smog shops would look at his 80s chevy. Then again that could have just been a dick of a smog tech.

There IS NO LAW that says that Federal emissions vehicles cannot be smogged in cali. That simply is not true in any way. There is also NO LAW that requires you to swap any smog equipment. Federal vehicles are smogged in cali as federal vehicles...

As racepar1 said it will be tested as a federal emissions vehicle. Even if you bought a new car in Georgia you would still need to Smog it to operate in California.

As for emissions getting tougher in other states. This is completely true so while you may not need to smog your 240sx currently you may need to on your next one. Oh and guess who's laws you will be using. Yup Califormia's.

I'm actually slowly going to KA-T w/the ka/Sr hybrid manifold.I got the stock air box and other components. I guess I'll have to figure out how to make it efficient enough to pass smog.

Two reasons: Job and family. But then again most people here probably have shitty jobs and must not care much about family since they would rather move out of state to make a smog test easier. Zilvians are hilarious. I have to go to Florida once a year for job training and I will tell you I absolutely CANNOT stand it there after living in Cali my whole life! I'd never go back if I didn't have to.
