I do agree with this, and it's rather sad. Sure, America has a great military that can kick ass, has the latest and greatest technology, and has plenty of business power.

But what good is a country who's future generations will be less and less intelligent with the country cutting back on education? The standards in schools are so low it's ridiculous. The high school exit exam is a joke. But I'm not talking solely about schools. The news are limited too. Watch BBC or the French news. You'll learn more about the US on those stations than you will on CNN or Fox. The people are uneducated because the country chooses to leave them uneducated.

Nobody understands geography at all here. I'm not a wizard in geography, but I was brought up to know the basics that most here don't have. For a country that believes it controls the world, its people sure don't even know where the world begins and where it ends. My neighbor thought Taiwan was in Japan. Give me a break.

I also don't necessarily care for the population in general. Sure, nobody is perfect and surely you'll never find a place where you can like everyone. But Americans are so damned superficial and materialistic. All they care about is having a new car every year, a new phone every month, and a new girlfriend everyday. I observe people on a day to day basis at work, at home, wherever I may be. Usually, my observations come out the same. All they care about is "Me".

I live in America. I would never live anywhere else right now. I'm not saying it's a horrid place to live, as this is where I want to live. I just don't understand how you can all be so conceited and so sure of yourselves. You're all like Rambo. Let's blow everything up. Shoot now, ask questions later. Forget using our heads.

Ohhh I do have to agree with you on education. It a freaking joke. Hell, reading things that people write online, in magazines, and even yes, in my textbooks and finding grammatical errors drives me up the wall!

American news is a joke. There is no real "news" to report and when there is something that should be put out, it is covered up.

I..... truly... HATE to say this, but....
you live in California.
while I know superficial people, the majority probably isn't as bad as you think. younger people certainly are. but, I know plenty of people who care more about living life than about buying new shit to one up everybody. it's all where you look.

also, I'm posting military pictures because they show a mixture of pride, power, and advanced technology. I'm not a fan of razing countries, but it's nice to know that if it needs to be done, if push comes to shove, this country will take care of just about anything.

LOL @ the neighbor thinking Taiwan was in Japan. It's sad to say that the generation today is not the same as it was years ago. Just imagine the children growing up in today's era and how they will act. Its tough out there, cutting education is not the answer but hell a president who reads a telepromter to 6th graders isn't bright at all either. We have had a ton of acts of terrorism lately even though the media doesnt call it that,obamacare,etc. We are almost no longer America and totally forgot our founding fathers. You choose to be dumb in geography but expert in being a 911 operator then so be it! some people make THEIR wrong choices, doesn't mean they can re-choose where they want to seep through in the coffee filter. Not to say that it's bad to not be filtered. Hell the unfiltered coffee might not be with the rest of the goodness but sometimes you have the batch that gets mixed into cookie dough or ice cream. without bad coffee there is no good coffee it's all about balance. Since we're such a dynamic country we need a dynamically sophisticated balancing scale.

A DYNAMIC nation needs people to be materialistic! It's all apart of our cyclical balancing scale. It protrudes out to other nations making it even better! One day your ranting about people not knowing what the hell is going on in the world will change because America is still in the process of creating it!

and to busted, I love Cali because we're an important piece of the chess game. Not only that, Cali is one of the best examples of how we're winning. In a string-theory sense, it's like we're a mini-USA look at how most of the world thinks about the US. Now look at how most of the nation thinks about Cali. Now look at how many pawns are in a chess game. Not to say that Californians aren't pawns because we make the best ones! Just like how our nation makes the best ones! This is true. The fact of the matter, is that if you measure how "good" a healthcare system is in terms of HOW MANY people get treated (in this case it is because they are free), then sure maybe we aren't the best.

Everyone knows that if you REALLY have something wrong with you, you come to the US, where we have the best doctors, facilities, research, treatment in the world.

It's the standard liberal view versus MY view.

How do you measure how "good" or "well" a group of people are doing (healthcare, income, education, etc.)?

The liberal way of thinking is that the more people you have that meet some minimum standard, the better you are doing.

My way of thinking (drawn from calculus/micoreconomic theory) is that everything (Education, income, healthcare, etc) has a "distribution function"

...which shows the percentage of people at a given level (income, level of healthcare, etc.).

My way of thinking, and I believe the correct way, is that the BEST THING FOR THE WHOLE GROUP of people is when the "AREA UNDER THE CURVE" is maximized.

The liberal way is to "sacrifice" area under the curve in order to increase the percentage of people above some minimum standard.


Due to the way things almost ALWAYS work, this results in a decrease in efficiency.

The microeconomic counterpart would be how installing a price ceiling or minimum wage leads to a decrease in efficiency, for those familiar with that stuff.


EXAMPLE (Sorry in advance if I offend anyone):

It costs literally 10s or 100s of thousands of dollars to provide an education to a mentally handicapped elementary school student (I know bc my parents have been on school boards, etc.).

This money is spent to bring that person up to reach some minimum level of knowledge/intelligence/school experience/functionality in society.

In reality, society as a whole would benefit more of you spent $10,000 each on 10 of the smartest kids in the class.

Area under the curve VS. "getting as many people as possible above some limit"

All the greatest civilizations throughout history disintegrated. They all eventually reached a point where they assumed they were great enough already so there was no need to constantly strive for further improvement. Slowly but surely their progression halted due to their own conservativeness and bureaucracy, and today in their locations stand third world countries.

I wish all those billions of dollars spent on the giant war machines everyone is posting would go towards things that were useful to every citizen, instead of living in a bubble of paranoia constantly preparing for some armed conflict. And when it comes down to it, all the technology could not find one guy hiding in a cave somewhere, which is pathetic and embarrassing.
