A little old, but still awesome and enlightening. I read something a year or so ago that had similar telemetry comparisons of Shumi and Barrichello, when Schumacher was left-foot braking but Rubens was still using his right foot. It showed Michael getting back on the gas earlier in most corners, and feathering the brakes to balance the car. Simply amazing.
Still, nothing is quite as cool as Senna's rapid-fire mid-corner throttle manipulation. You could close your eyes and tell him apart from everyone else with that brap-brap-brap. Then he had to up and die on my birthday. Bastard. |

some drivers are just born with skill coming out of every pore of their body
others, like me, have to earn it

seriously though, i think at that level, a lot of it is just plain natural talent. another guy who i think could rival Schumacher for best driver in the world is Sebastien Loeb of the WRC. He's only been competing for 2 years in the WRC and he came in 2nd (narrowly) last year, and 1st this year (by a huge margin). That guy is so fast, but his greatest asset is his consistency. A lot of really good drivers (Solberg, Gronholm, etc) will be faster on some stages, albeit not by much, but they'll end up going over their limit and breaking their cars. Loeb almost never has that problem. |
