s14 S14 Kouki tails, colors??

Hey zilvians. I have looked on google and have gotten alot of mixed answers regarding kouki tails. I have a 95 zenki and would like to put some kouki tails on it to update it a bit.

Upon searching ebay i see black ones, grey ones, and what looks to be a purple-ish looking sets too.

From reading on several forums some people say that different color s14's in japan came with different color lights while others claim it is a matter of them fading and have the appearance of grey or purple.

Can someone clarify this?

Also i notice from pics jdm koukis do not utilize the little 194 sidemarkers. Is there a template in the rear of the housing that allows you to use like a dremel and cut out the socket hole in order to reuse the usdm 194 side lights?

TIA

They are just faded if they are any color other than black

zilvia consensus is that they were ALL made with BLACK surroundings. the different colors you see were caused by sun exposure.

Don't know the answer to your second question, but a little masking tape and black vinyl paint will make those gray/purple lights look brand new.

For jdm tail lights, you can dremel the side lights to fit the 194 socket. Mark everything twice, do it slow, and you'll be fine.

I got the aftermarket LED kouki tails and there is no spot at all to tuck the sidemarker bulbs in, even if you were to cut a hole, that area is pretty slim. Im not sure if its the same as the stock kouki tails though. I need to delete those bulbs because right now theyre just stuffed behind the taillights and when close (at night) you can see the light coming out around the taillight housings lol

That's why you use pin striping for the edges. I did it and I'm not very good at those sorts of things either. They look factory new now.

are the ones that have already faded grey or purple....are they more fragile and more prone to cracking/breakage? or is purely aesthetic?

if i do happen to receive a set of faded lights are they gonna give me problems aside from them not being black?

i kinda like the grey ones LOL

It's just aesthetic. If you like the grey ones then you should have no problem finding some.

Maybe for a few months, 'til that spray paint oxidizes and looks cruddy. The best way to refinish them is to wetsand, clean, then paint with automotive paint (and a candy red treatment if you wish too). I've posted more info on that in definitive lighting thread.

I used vinyl dye. It absorbs into the plastic...haven't had any problems with it but my car stays in a garage all the time.

is this the same silviaks2nr i met on hidplanet.com?

man those koukis look amazing!!!

i am 110% sure there is no way i can manage to make a set of kouki lights look anything like that...

Was the emblem removed prior to painting or did it get painted as well.

Yup. and no I left the emblem on. It would look really bad if the emblem were light grey/purple and the rest of the lights were black, IMO. The stock emblem actually turns yellow on the edges if it's worn enough...

Pictures really do these things no justice (or maybe just my iphone pictures dont), they look so much better in person.

Here's a few, you cant see the problem I was talking about though, I never thought to snap one up close of the light coming out around the housing

You're making it way too complicated lol.

I don't think anyone truly likes the faded/grey tails. You mentioned that you like the grey somewhat, well if you do get those faded tails install them on your s14 and tell us how you like it. You'll probably think it's ugly then ask us again how to paint them black.

Just get a decent set of black kouki tails and if they are slightly faded maybe they just need a good buffing.

And if you are really concerned about the 194 side markers just get USDM kouki tails.

And if you still can't decide and if this is such a big deal then stick with your zenki tails and be happy lol.

Oh and don't bother with ebay or importers, just get USDM tails from someone locally or on the forums.

When I wanted to buy my kouki tails my local JDM importer had a set for $250 yet they were either scratched up or slightly cracked and they didn't have the side marker bulbs which I actually like. And don't judge the ebay listings based on the pictures, they tend not to be as clean as they look.

I found a set locally from a private seller for $175 no cracks, no scratches just needed to be buffed and cleaned. They look brand new.

Damn you ordered from the local JDM importer I just mentioned. I am from Mississauga, ON. They are good, but they overcharge and usually the item isn't as good condition as you expected it to be or it's just overpriced for the condition. I was able to see the tails in person and I said no. You bought them through ebay...

And plus... I think those tails you got were actually painted grey... the job looks half-assed and to be honest I think I saw those tails there two years ago. When I asked for kouki tails he brought out 5 sets and one of them was really grey like that...

Oh well hope you like em :P

he emailed me more pics of them an even used a paint pen and put my initials on them before sending pics so i know i am getting the ones pictured in the email he sent. I did ask if they were painted and he said no. I also did ask if they were unacceptable were the returnable and moe said no prob if I do not like them just send em back for a full refund.

SO, I hope for the best being this is like my xmas present to myself being no one else prolly got me anything jdm LOL.

Glad you're excited but I do know people who have had issues returning items with them as you are technically buying "used" items. If anything you will have to pay return shipping.

The tails look good condition, I just don't like the grey at all. I suppose it will only look nice on a grey car... even then idk. But no big deal you could always paint them. I still think they were painted and he lied because you can see overspray... maybe it's just me.

I think that "overspray" might just be a lot of dust as you can see fingerprints all over them.

I hope youre happy with those dude, as it is your car afterall. Personally, I think they look super faded and dont really dig that look
