engine too far forward....
so i finally decided to crawl under my s14 since i felt some vibrations... first sign something is wrong..... driveshaft is only 75% of the way into the transmission , WTF??? then i notice the trans mount is not bolted to the transmission.... the engine seems to be sitting about an 1.5 inches too far forward...yet engine is securely bolted to engine mounts... anyone ever seen this problem? any helpful suggestions would be great.....
maybe use a come-along and pull it back into place? thanks in advance |
The engine is bolted in. There is no fucking way the engine can be forward 1.5 inches
Is this thread serious? |
Not a joke , i am in shock as well.. checked part numbers to see if trans is from s14.... It is... It does have an r32 rear diff, i am wondering if trans mount to chasis is incorrect....

Pix or ban.
I will try sunday, need to change oil, so i will try to get her on a lift
If the motor mounts are bolted in, there is no way the motor can be forward. Check to see if you have the right driveshaft.
sounds like u have an auto trans mount bracket in a converted to manual car or vise versa. they are different, and will not line up by about the amount u are describing. it is unsafe to drive
Vin is for a manual, ... Does a rb swap make the trans sit further back ? My shifter is not in the right spot either.. sits too far forward in the hole .
.. my navan bumper was cut to fit a front mount at one time... And it has a skyline diff.... Makes me wonder what may have been in it before |
u need an adapter bracket if running the rb motor/trans. (this info is kinda important and shoulda been in the original posting!!!) mazworks makes the trans mount bracket adapter. if its been converted back to sr/ka maybe its still has the the rb trans mount? look at the pics and figure out what u have going on. its ur trans mount bracket in some way/shape/form

I do not have an rb trans... Wonderin if previous owner had one in it
well i will get pics as soon as i can get her on a lift....

Stock ka24de...stock trans...
then as i originally stated, u must have an auto trans mounting bracket in your manual car when it was thrown back to "stock" condition b4 u purchased it. u need to find the manual trans bracket and ur problems should be solved. but get the car on lift and take some pics of the trans mount situation and of the motor mounts to make sure they havent been messed with.
That was my thought too, but drive line must be from an auto or something, it isnt seated all the way into the output shaft....and i need to figure out y the shifter is way too forward in the hole..... Love dealing with hack jobs from previous owners... Weeeee
have u owned a 240 before? the shifter doesnt sit exactly in the center of that hole for the shifter anyway, it is slightly forward. the driveshaft issue has to deal with the non stock diff. s14 driveshafts came in different lengths depending on if it had factory ABS or not because the diff housings differences. when the diff is changed the correct length driveshaft may not have been used, or u may even need a custom made 1. use the search function for this issue and u should find that answer quickly
probably just doesnt have the dust cap on the end of the trans.
i owned a s13 for about 6 months,,, i tore it apart, put the ka in my 510 and junked the rest..... so this is the first s chasis i plan on keeping... i have a feeling there was some hokey shit goin on with this car...... has alot of aftermarket goodies..... i will get pics asap.... oh and i knew about the abs length difference, i need to get under there and get all the part numbers i can find... ..see whats going on....
What you probably has is an ABS driveshaft, which was shorter than the non-ABS cars shaft. This will make the driveshaft not look like it is in the trans all the way. We really do need pictures as well.
Stock KA has been confirmed, what trans? Auto or Man? You have an R32 diff in the car, but was the car ABS or Non-ABS from the factory? |
Stock ka, stock manual.. i will look afyer work to see if it has abs. Trans mount bracket is bolted to chasis, but is about an inch from bolting to transmission...pics on sunday if wirk is slow enough to put it on a lift

Is that a dust cover of some sort around the tail shaft? That driveshaft looks like it has plenty of insertion into the trans. Keep in mind that it is designed to slide in and out slightly as the engine torques. If you're that worried about it, remove the shaft, measure how much insertion you have. As long as 75-80% of it is inserted into the trans I wouldn't worry about it. The part of the shaft that gets inserted is roughly 4 or 5" long iirc.
Yes its the dust cover, but the main worry is that the trans is not bolted the crossmember... If you look at the 4th pic down, u can kind of see that the holes are an inch off... Is that an auto crossmember?
Yeah most likely you have an auto trans crossmember. You should be able to pick up a used one for $50 or less. Easy to swap em out tho.
gotta keep an eye out for one..... wreckers around here are usually out of 240's craigslist it is or just fab one from scratch..easier for me than hunting...
There should be an directional arrow and an A or B stamped in it.
couldnt find any stampings or info on the crossmember, but if thats how far the driveline is supposed to sit in, then i will just make my own crossmember..
can the engine mounts be on the wrong way? just a curious question
well if any s14 owners out there could take a pic of their output shaft on their tranny and where is sits, that would be great
