Are you sure your head gasket is leaking? or is it your valve cover gasket?

well when it failed smog for my inspection i took it to my mechanic and i also told him about the slow water leak that i had and that no hoses or anything like that were damaged or leaking on the outside and he said it sounded like a seaping head gasket but he was going to run a vacuum leak test on it....he said that's what it was after the test, and he said that also might be what caused me to fail on my emissions test (CO high and low side), so my friend and i want to replace it ourselves since the shop will charge about 1200 for labor (ouch!! and i figured we could do with his experience and my chiltons :-) i put some alumaseal in there for the time being to take care of it but i'm sure that's not gonna hold me forever, just till the summer when i have the time to take care of it and soon considering my inspection went out in march

change your oil yourself, and look for coolant in it. you may also be able to see oil in the radiator if you take cap off. That way you know for sure thats what it is. Shouldn't be too hard to change since you don't have to dissasemble the head or anything. I don't know how detailed the Chiltons is either. You should just get the OEM head gasket from Nissan.
