so yea, i'm visiting my parents for the holidays. they have 56k still, because there's no cable in their area and the phone central office is too far away and the phone lines are too old for dsl.

anybody know some alternative ways to get some high speed internet? they have directv but directv's satellite internet is really expensive.

haha, get net zero!!! ....they have FREE online tech support, and $1.99 per minute for "live help" aka on the phone. but get this.....HOW can you use a Free online tech support.....if you DONT HAVE INTERNET?! haha. Net Zero markets their "free online tech support" as a featured benefit....kinda reminds me of this sign:

net zero sucks
those companies that offer 'dsl speeds with dialup' are full of shit.
doesnt take rocket science to figure it out

too far from the CO for dsl and no cable in area? sucks
call the cmoapny and see if any plans for DSL or cable
are they in SBC or Verizon area?\
what city they in?

they're in rural western washington, an hour north of seattle. i believe it's verizon territory, and they have no plans to improve the infrastructure.

that's one of the many reasons i moved out of there

so far it's looking like some sort of satellite internet is what it's gonna be

I have 56k at home as well, but that's only cuz I'm too cheap to pay for high speed. I can think of many other areas to spend that money. For now, I just grab a snack...

watch a movie... :drama:

take a nap...

and then go back to the computer. Haha, It's not really that bad. Maybe I'm just used to it, then again, i'm not paying anything for it either.

I used to be on the other side of that, I lived with my mom in an area with no high speed internet... and then spend a few weeks at my dad's house with cable. Going from 56k to cable is great, going from cable to 56k is like eating nail sandwiches.

Then I was sharing an apartment with friends, we had DSL and it pwn3d 56k.
But coming up to visit my dad felt like going back to high speed again. We had such a slow DSL connection that it was like it was only in the middle of dial up and cable.

Have you checked if vontage can help? I switched over to that, and it's been tits ever since. I can't believe I delt with dial up for 6 years. How far north are they, past mulkiteo?

I hated living in rural norcal for the same reason. I lived way too far from the CO to even think of DSL, and all the phone lines to my house were so shitty that dialup was slow as hell and had troubles connecting/staying connected....

BTW ^^ "Vonage" is for voice over ip, it uses your pre-existing broadband/DSL/Cable to allow you telephone access to the world. Has nothing to do with providing higher speed Internet access to rural areas..

Satellite or wireless broadband (from someone like www.clearwire.com) is probably your best bet.
