So I was driving today in my S14, and got pulled over by a motorcycle cop in El Cajon. Asks for my license and reg, so I give it to him. He comes back, hands me my license and reg, and then asks me to pop the hood. i ended up getting owened on a smog violation for my race header and gotta go to the referee next week. You guys ever get screwed for running those SRs?

my friend had to got a ticket for "illegal engine modifications" because he had an injen intake. When he had to take it to the state ref, he mentioned the carb legal sticker and needless to say, he got off the hook.

Why did the cop pull you over to begin with?

12-23-2005, 02:49 AM

I don't think he does. All he said was he got a ticket for his "race header."
If that's all you have, just swap it out with the stock exhaust manifold and put back any other smog stuff you might have taken out, if you did.

so u have to go to a ref u cant just go to any smog stations

Scary. What about all the Muscle cars guys? I bet they have as much illegal engine modifications as we do. Thank God I dont have emissions testing where I am. But I am taking my 240 out to Cali for 4 months in Jan. Hope I dont run into problems.

When is there going to be a revolution in California? You'd figure the girly-man H1-driving governator would repeal some of these draconian laws. Oh yeah, I forgot this isn't about the environment, it's about a revenue stream!
Aren't pre-71 cars exempt from emissions? If I lived in California, I'd be driving a 1969 Datsun 510 powered by 24 chainsaw engines.

Cops up here will pull you over all day long for exhaust (which is BS because I live in Milwaukee. Halery Davidson capitol. And a stock Harley is 10 millions times louder then a car with an exhasut). But they don't EVAR look under the hood.

Yea, I live in a suburb of Richmond VA, and I have never gotten pulled, with either my James Bond smokescreen style CA powered hatch, My Corolla with 2.5" no resonator or muffler exhaust, or my slammed 240. I don't have emissions testing in my county, but I do have safty regulations, and basiclly anything not oem replacement is illiegal. So my dumped car is illigal, as is a louder than stock exhaust. IT's very open to interpertation by the law enforcement official. I've been lucky so far..... To the topic starter, count your blessings, at least you only have to change a header.

Yes, pre 75 are exempt from smog emissions. (California)

wow they lowered the year? it's used to be '75.

12-23-2005, 12:30 PM
To be more specific vehicles 1975 and older are exempt. There is no longer a rolling year exemption. 1976+ needs smogged, unless you're diesel.

you're not even that screwed... just change the header... piece a cake... and for sr guys that get caught.. they pay a $350 fine and they're off the hook too.. or just swap a ka in there and pay nada

I got pull over the day i got my S14, i wasnt driving fast or anything but my car is really low.
He saw my cage and was like pop your hood, i laughed because my car is uber stock.
He left mad.

hahah yes uberstock, stock things like a ROLLCAGE.
I live in chesterfield county, just south of richmond,va. The only times I've ever gotten pulled was for speeding, running a stopsign, and trespassing. Its great. I know a dude who rolls around in a trans am that pulled less then a 10 second quarter mile.this is basically a full drag car, with street tires, insurance, and registration. hahaha. Hes drives it most of the time (he makes soe much $$,why the fuck not?)

some people on here don't know what they are talking about.
Just pay 350 and get off with a sr???!! I think not.....
It DOES depend on the officer and what he cited you for. Luckily the court in El Cajon is more leanant than the kearny mesa branch....
However, depending on the citation, it may be a fix-it-ticket where you fix whats wrong and pay 10 bucks. There is another violation for "modifying or removing smog equipment". This fine can reach up to 1200 dollars!!
If i were you i would find a stock header real quick and put it on(i have one you can borrow for a couple weeks if need be). Also, don't try to get anything past a referee. All the refs i've seen know more about cars than most of us combined..... The ref i went to could tell me the what year PART i had just by looking at the number.....Anyways, good luck.
let me know if you need to borrow a stock header.

the ticket he got a few weeks ago was just for exhaust noise, the ticket he got this time sends him to the state ref.
he has stock parts so it shouldnt be an issue for him.
YakuzaS14

just put the stock exhaust mani on and let us know how it went when u take it to the ref

Funny. I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop in el cajon the other day too. Made me pop my hood, but its all stock so I didnt give a shit. Got a ticket for no front license plate, and bald tires. I didnt even know you could get a ticket for bald tires. He said my car was too low, but didnt know the exact measurements so he didnt write me up for that, said something about headlights. Its stupid though, cause el cajon is filled with dudes with lifted trucks and their lights shine right into peoples rearviews. Whatever....

hahah yes uberstock, stock things like a ROLLCAGE.
He was obviously referring to his engine bay, since, aside from no cat, rideheight and exterior lighting, there's nothing the cop could really cite him for.
AFAIK, there's no law that says you can't have a rollcage.
AFAIK.

It was just really humerous. I love how people fuck up words. The other day in my acura I pulled in and talked to this guy with a Scion, see if he wanted to set up a run. He says "yeah its completely stock, done nothing to it". I was like well then I'll smoke you, then he says "well when I got it,it had 165hp,but now its got 210"....thats not stock then :loco:

well, to some people, boltons is still a stock engine.
165 to 210 is probably more than bolt ons though.

Anyone else see the irony in this statement?
Cali cops make me glad I'm keeping everything visible stock. "Oh, you want me to pop my hood? With pleasure. Oh, and please note the CARB-legal tags on every single mod. My headlights are legal, but hey... I'll let you write me a fix-it for my front plate."

Late on replying....but that is so true the trucks in El Cajon are loud, kick rocks at you and blind you at night. I have a Hotshot Header with no carb sticker but it has o2 sensors I'm just waiting for DC to make one so I can keep it leagl in Cali, I don't like cops or getting stoped.
