Hello my name is Amanda. I just picked up my first car it's pretty stock, but it is a 90 240sx with gp sport body kit, tein coilovers, magnaflow exhaust, act clutch, and 17" 5zigen fn01r rims. The problem I'm having is the car idles funny. It will dip and almost die but save itself occasionally. Most of the time I have to pop the clutch or restart it. I popped the hood to see if I could find out what was wrong because the guy who sold it to me said that the mas was bad. I looked at the mas, and coming from the same wire loom are 2 sensors or something that aren't plugged into anything. One of the plugs says SJD...I don't know what these are, or where they go, but I think that it might fix the idle problem. any input would help, thanks a lot.
I'll try to put up pictures tomoorow.

What you are describing sounds like what my s13 did when the MAF was killed by my K&N filter oil on my shiny new intake system...i pwned myself in that case w/my n00bness

wait, amanda!!! sweet another chick on the boards:w00t:

a stock S13 MAF should be pretty east to come by seeing as eceryone switches them out when they go SR with somehting a bit better. look in the FS section, or post a WTB thread. never know may luck out and find someone local that you can pick it up off of for cheap/free

1) Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAFS) could be the culprit. Check voltage on MAFS and replace if needed.

2) Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) could be the culprit (on back of intake manifold, between manifold and firewall). Remove and clean with carb cleaner or replace.

3) Bad grounds in the engine wiring harness could be the culprit. Trace harness and rewire or replace.

Download a copy of the Factory Service Manual (FSM) at zeroyon.com if you haven't already.

Good luck

u might have a vacuum leak. actually i had the same problem in my s13 and it ended up being a vacuum leak so check ur hoses carefully for cracks before u start trowing parts at it.

just a thought. :P

+3 for vacuum leak. check your hoses, same thing was happening to me. replaced a few worn/cracked hoses and everything is tip top now.

Haha, yah.. pretty sure he meant pics of her unconnected sensors. I'm curious to see what she's talking about as well.

I too think its a vacuum leak. Do you hear any hissing with the engine running?

BTW: Welcome to Zilvia.

Word.

Anyways... I had real bad idle problems, all I did was take the MAF connector, blew some air in it to clean it out, plugged it back in. Fixed the idle problem. Funny thing is, it fixed my friend's idle problem also when we did it to his car.

Had the same experience with MAF. Those pins like to be clean.

I had the same problem with my car.

Replace your cap and rotor (on distributor). Before you start spending doh on aftermarket crap, do a full tune up on our car. i.e. Sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, cap, rotor, air filter, clean out throttle body, flush out radiator, bleed brakes+clutch etc etc

Damn, its hard to tell from those pics.. but that looks like some hacked up wiring to me.

I'd compare with any other 240s in your area to see correctly where everything goes. That last plug looked like the CAS for the distributor.. but like I said, its kinda hard to tell.

infinitexsound
12-15-2005, 07:51 PM
yeah looks like the plug for the cam angle sensor(cas), u might wanna check out the MAF (not mas) tho check the pins , if its dirty that might be ur problem...stupid connections i tell u... anyways ur hand should be dirty not clean.... please clean up that engine bay seriously it looks horrid..

NemeGuero
12-15-2005, 07:56 PM
In fact, that looks like a really old, if not wrong, distributor...
Mine looks nothing like that design/shape.. which would explain why some connectors aren't connected?

The guy who sold me the car said that he did a new motor put in about 40k ago and that's all he told me about it, so I don't know, you might be right. If you could check that out tomorrow, let me know, I would appreciate it a lot.

And thanks everyone for the help and input, if you have anything else you think would help, please let me know.

Can you call him and ask him?
It'd make trouble shooting a lot easier if we knew the wiring harness that's in the car, the distributor in the car, etc..

Just kidding:-D . The car looks great in the pics, need some sidemarkers though! Personally I went with the ML320 sidemarkers,so fucking bright and easy. Anyway, welcome to the board. Hmm.hissing sound means vaccume leak,eh? My 240 started making a really loud hissing since I put the intake on when I turn the motor off,and theres a really slight hiss when its running...hmm...

Yeah, That harness has been hacked up. Looks like a bad SOHC to DOHC swap. You ether need to grab a 91+ FSM and start tracing wires or get a DOHC harness.

I meant pics of her, not her car.

The car is ok.

I am more interested in her.

Anyways, get a new harness.

But you cant even be sure thats the issue really.. you should do basic things like check vac with a gauge, make sure timing is correct, that the IACV is functioning properly, before you start replacing things.

Check codes on the ECU

Basics Basics Basics

Get a FSM.
